Soft stool Hannah has soft stool. She is eating and drinking normally. She usually poops around three-five times a day. This morning she pooped and it was firm. Around an hour ago she pooped again and it reminded me of soft serve icecream. It wasn't liquidly but it wasn't firm either. What causes this to happen? She is currently eating puppy chow (the food the breeder was feeding her). |
Hi there! How long have you had her, how old is she, and how much does she weigh? It could be caused by lots of things! Has she been wormed recently, had a change of schedule or any stress? These are the basic things... |
Hannah's info I will have had her two weeks on Friday. She will be 14 weeks old on Friday. She weighed 2.1 pounds at her vets visit which was on the 20th of December. However,She feels heavier now. |

With the minor symptom your describing right now, I would probably try and get 2 ccs of pepto (once now, another in an hour and see how she looks after) in her, if you're not comfortable with that, you could try canned pumkin (not pumkin pie filler) I have always just used pepto. After you get her all lined out, I would switch her food. Puppy Chow isn't high quality. You can use these next few days of getting her back to normal to research!! LOL!! There is soooo much great info on this site about dog food, you shouldn't have any problems (yeah right, the more you know the harder it is!!!). |
Bud's soft stool I am having the same problem with my puppy. He is 9wks old and was on puppy chow when we got him He had soft stools then too. I am slowly weaning him onto Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul as the pieces are small and he loves it. He is extremely active but his stools are soft and yesterday for a brief time, it was liquid. Now it is soft and foul smelling. I have been giving him some yogurt to help. We have had him for about a week and when I took him to the vet two days after we got him, he had a clean bill of health (no fleas, worms, etc.). |

I am not so sure puppy chow is a good food. I would try changing to a better food. I used pedigree for a few years but my boy seemed to stop liking it. I changed him to EVO, which is a really good food. He likes it alot. My boy only gets soft stools and diahrea when he eats wet foods. He can eat wet chunks but not the other. Maybe a change in food will change this. Good Luck. |
Bud's soft stool I have not given him any people food. His fecal the other day was clear. I am going to take him to a vet here in San Antonio that is called Mobile Pet Care as I have been taking my critters there for years and they are available on certain weekends during the month. When I was there yesterday for my two cats' shots, I discussed this with the vet but after yesterday afternoon's wet stool, he is going today. I don't give him treats as I am not sure what would be a good reward treat for going potty outside and not in the house. My previous yorkie wouldn't eat treats. |
soft stool 2 days ago i bought a 9 week old yorkie and have noticed that her stool is soft and runny, she eats, plays and sleeps just fine but she does scratch a lot. I was wondering if at that age its normal and she will get better or not. I am feeding her royal canin for yorkies. |
Hi, are you feeding him wet food? My yorkie can only have dry food, wet gives him diarreha.. I also use a high quality dog food as well :D |
No i'm giving her dry food only... |

welcome to YT (both of you!) Have they been checked for worms? as some have said here canned (pure) pumpkin is supposed to help them...didn't help with my 3's issues...had to be put on meds....They had giardia and bacteria in their intestines. My vet told me that sometimes if they are stressed this can affect the good bacteria and cause bad bacteria. Did your vet check for this? |
She is very young, you said 9 weeks.. First I recommend taking her to a vet, and make sure you are feeding her a high quality dog food.. I actually feed Moses Merrick. In his first 3 years I fed him Pedigree.. I didn't know much about food at this time. He had high bile counts and signs of liver shunts. This can be controlled by diet, a poor diet will cause many issues. Since you baby is so young first the vet, now alot of vets don't know about good nutrition, so I advice you to seek out high quality foods for your pup, also my baby can not eat wet foods at all. If he does get an upset tummy I stop all foods and give him brown rice with chicken and a little pumpkin. The pumpkin helps to firm his stool and then you can start adding his food back. I added a few links for you to look at below. Petco now carry's a large assortment of quality foods.. :) Merrick Pet Care, Inc. | Our Products Best Dog Food | Top Picks and Reviews at ConsumerSearch |
