Overweight Yorkie Going on one year now I took Gizmo in from a woman who kept him in a cat crate both day and night. He wasn't properly fed or excersied so he ended up weighing 23lbs! My vet put him on px diet food and I began walks and play. He has gotten down to 19lbs and our goal is 15lbs. We have moved and our new vet wants to put Gizmo on diet drugs since he's reached a plateau. Is there a healthy diet or anything else I can do to prevent the use of these drugs? Gizmo is a 5 year old neutred male. Thank you. |

Welcome, iluvgizmo! According to other posters here, diet dog foods are mostly filler. I guess I'm going to ask the obvious: have you considered changing up his diet and exercise? On exercise, could you increase either the time or intensity? One possibility is to have him wear a small backpack on walks. I also play fetch with my dog on a hill to make it more tiring for him. You could also use one of those things that extends the range of your throw - those throw-sticky thingamaobs. ;) |

How much does he exercise daily? What brand and type of food is he eating and how much? What does he get for treats? |

I would certainly not want to give my dog diet drugs. I would continue with the exercise. If he doesn't lose anymore in a couple month I would cut the amount of food a bit more. Has he been tested to make sure he has no thryoid or diabetes problem etc. |
