Panacur wormer Hey, I'm new to YT. We have a 9 week old new furbaby named Riley. Riley weighs in at a whopping 1 1/2 lbs. :) We lost a Yorkie baby girl about 7 years ago to a seizure, so I feel like I'm being way overprotective, but I have a question. It was time for Riley to be wormed, but not for his shots yet, so the vets office said I could come in and pick up his wormer. I gave them his weight and they gave me Panacur and told me to follow the instructions on the bottle which state (1 cc per 10 lbs. of body weight for 3 days) When I asked about this, the lady said to give him the full 1cc even though he's only 1 1/2 lbs. I just wanted to make sure that was OK. Why so much? Just checking. I don't want to take any chances. Thanks for your help. |
Personally I would not give my dogs that dosage.I would adjust to their weights individually. You could always double check with another vet. |
Maybe she meant .1 of the 1cc I can tell you my vet advises me that when mine are that size to give them .2cc (not 2cc's) each. The always end up with a negative fecal exam :-) |
You say it's time for Riley to be wormed. Does Riley actually have worms based on a stool sample test? Due to Riley's small size, & if Riley tests positive for worms, I'd give Riley a dosage proportional to body weight. If it's too much, Riley should vomit. Get a stool sample test after worming to make sure the worms are gone. |

I agree! Always check with your vet! I try to not give any more "chemicals" to my babies then I need to:) Jackson:aimeeyork Gracie:aimeeyork Tucker:aimeeyork Rosey:aimeeyork Abigayle:aimeeyork |
Panacur is a really gentle wormer, but I would never give that dose to such a tiny pup. With my boys as pups, we used the granular panacur form, which allows for a specific dose, such as 1/2 gram for 5lbs. Call your vet and voice your concerns. |

Although, there might be a reason that you need to use a certain amount. Regardless of the size of your dog, certain medications need to be so concentrated to be effective against things. Does that make sense? I don't know if that's true for this particular case but it might be the reason. I would call a couple of other local vets and see what they say. |
I definitely would not overdose the puppy on dewormer, it's unnecessary. Just use a 1cc syringe to draw out the appropriate dosage (.15cc) and administer. Panacur is administered once per day for three days at the same time each day. Use the syringe to apply the liquid to the roof of the mouth and this will prevent the possibility of aspirating the meds. |
