Why Does My Puppy Always Scratch Her Behind
 
I was wondering if anybody had an answer to why my 5 mo old puppy always wants to lick/scratch her behind. She will be playing and then just stop suddenly and do her own thing back there. I try not to put her on foods with whole wheat flour because I heard it can give them allergies. I'm a new Yorkie owner and am confused. I have her on Science Diet Puppy Small and give her Nutri-Cal Supplements once a day. She weighs 7.7 lbs and doesn't appear to be "fat" because I can feel her ribs. Also,what is the opinion of having her neutered? The vet told me that every cycle she has increases her changes of breast cancer? Is this true. However, is it better to let her have a litter first. Will it calm her down or make her hyper if she doesn't have puppies. Someone with experience please advise. I don't know what to do and the vet keeps asking me. I would appreciate anyone that can help and give me advise. Thank you...Peanut's mommie Sheryl.

Welcome to YT! I am a new mommy also, but I have quickly learned from this site that Science Diet is not a great food choice and it could be causing allergies. My furbaby was on science diet until about a week ago. She use to scratch a lot too. I tried her out on Wellness Puppy Super5 Mix and it seems as though her scratching has diminished significantly. If you have a female I think they get spayed and males get neutered. I don't know about letting her have a litter first someone will come along with that answer for you I'm sure.

Science Diet is not a good food and it's possible that it's causing some allergic reaction. Although if she's licking/scratching her ACTUAL behind, it's possible she has worms or her anal glands need to be expressed and she has some irritation. I responded to you on a different thread about this but she does not need to be given Nutrical every day.

And, unless you plan on breeding her, you should absolutely get her spayed. Your vet is right, her chances of cancer significantly increase with every heat cycle. It is a myth that dogs need to have a litter first.

She needs to see the vet if her butt is really itchy.
It could be worms, anal glands, or if it is just in the general area back there, it could be fleas.

A dog that is spayed before her first heat has less than a 1% chance of getting mammary cancer. Spayed before second heat she has an 8% chance. Spayed anytime after that she has a 26% chance. Pyometra is common in older, unspayed females and usually requires and emergency spay which is more dangerous because of the infection and quite a bit more costly.

Does she have hypoglycemia issues? Why the Nutrical daily?
How many times a day does she eat?
Have you thought about switching foods?

Anal Glands
 
Could someone plz explain to me what anal glands needing to be expressed means?? I know my puppy does not have fleas or worms cuz she has been checked several times. But I don't know what anybody means when they talk about her anal glands.

If you aren't comfortable or sure how to do it, your vet and possibly groomer can do it for you.

Well I think this was great information for anyone that doesn't know how to do that. That page was very detailed. Its great that anyone can learn what they need by just coming in and asking. Hope all this information helped. I bet you let the groomer take care if that part. At least till you get comfortable with that.
