Switch to adult food? Hi Everyone, Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season!!! I was just wondering at what age should I start changing my pups food from puppy formula to adult? Nala is 7 months going on 8. Do I wait for her 1 year? |
Switch after they are spayed or neutered. Dogs will often start gaining weight after they are altered if they're kept on a puppy formula. |
Oh, good thing I asked. Nala just got spayed...I'll finish this last bag I have and then switch it over...thanks! |
I've always been told you switch at one year and that's when I would switch. Dogs that are not fully grown still need the nutrients in a puppy food to develop properly. |
Their metabolisms change significantly after they are "fixed" though-- and small breed dogs do most of their growth before six months of age. If they are put onto a quality adult dog food with plenty of protein, they'll still have energy for growth-- just not as much fat as is common in puppy foods. |

Since no one here is a medically experienced professional, I suggest calling your vet. I bet they have a good answer for you! :) |
I used to be a vet tech. we were ALWAYS told to switch at a year old. you will want to do this in a 3 day grace period, where the first day you just add some adult food to the puppy food, little by little each day till you can ween them off, this will help with not making their tummies ache. Usually when dogs are spayed/neutred, it is not that they gain weight, that is a myth!!!!! |

I have always switched all of my small dogs to adult food at 6 mos. the vet told me this was fine |
well, every vet seems to have their own opions on things, so just call your vet and see what they say! |
I'm actually a veterinary nurse too... but you're going to get a variety of opinions either way. Excess weight is really at the core of a LOT of the most common health problems we see in dogs, so I'm really sensitive to the fact that most of the dogs out there are overweight, and that the problem very often begins in puppyhood. |
