Are Greenies Good?
 
Are Greenies necessary? Are they good for the dogs?

The samllest and lightest pack says it's okay for dogs 5 pounds and up, mine is 2.5 pounds, should I give half?

And @ how many months & how often do I feed Greenies?

There has been problems in the past with greenies. Dogs have a difficult time digesting them AND because they are so "gummy" it is possible for a Yorkie to Choke on them. (because they have such a small "throat" it is Easy for them to choke....... sadly, one of our YT members lost their little yorkie due to choking on a piece of candy recently as I recall....)
Shelby & Seymour used to LOVE greenies, but when I read about all problems and DEATHS that occurred due to greenies, we decided to be safe and not sorry.

Def better to be safe then sorry. Im returning the Greenies I bought tomorrow!!! How do you clean your babies teeth?

We brush their teeth with Petzlife gel. You can read about it here on Yorkietalk. Just Search Petzlife. There are several Yorkietalk vendors that can help you out with it..... some of them sell it!! ;)
We also give them crunchie treats. We get Itty bitty Buddy biscuits (the sweet potato madness flavor). They are really little.... perfect size. They are also ALL NATURAL!!! Made by Cloud star. ( www.cloudstar.com ) We also give them "Good Dog" dog treats. These too come in little sizes!! :D They come in Blueberry cobbler and apple dumpling and peanut butter & jelly. Shelby & Seymour LOVE the apple dumplin the best. They are made by sojourner farms. Also ALL natural!!!! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: ( All Natural Dog Food and Natural Dog Treats by Sojourner Farms ) We buy them at a pet bakery/store locally, but thought I would list the websites so you can find out if someone near you sells them.... or so you can order them! ;)

There are others that use different methods for teeth cleaning....... hopefully some will share what they do so you can decide what will work best for you!!!

Ooh, I didn't know you were a treat expert! Are any of the ones you mentioned soft? I like a soft treat for fast rewards in agility class, but I'm beginning to think they don't come that way without preservatives.

No, they aren't soft (as I mentioned..... good for their teeth :D)...... but they are very small and also not so hard that it takes a great effort for them to break them with their teeth (kind of "airy"....... I guess that is the only way to describe them)

And of course, we KNOW our treats!!! ........ Shelby & Seymour are JUST LIKE THEIR MOMMY!!! :rolleyes:

If you like soft treats I use an all natural one called The Loved Dog Treats. They are human grade, soft and you dont use a lot when used properly (they have videos on the website). It is developed by the dog trainer that Oprah uses - Tamara Geller.

Thanks. Hmm, I'll check those out. If they're small like that, they'd probably just swallow them anyway. My guys are gluttons.

And mina0710, those look like exactly what I'm looking for with soft treats. I found her site online. Thanks.

I did not realize that Yorkies could choke on these. I normanally give them when I couldn't brush Holly's teeth. I surely won't be doing that any more. Thanks Yorkie Talk.

they have a new type of greenie, called a biscuit i think, its more digestable...you can go online and get a free sample. greenies.com i think, we got one for fiona...she'll get a greenie here and there.....

Mine love greenies, the two smallest ones I give the greenie little bits. They're just tiny little pieces and I put them on the kitchen floor for them. I have been giving them for years, never a problem. They are much safer now, and the only thing I don't like, is they don't last as long anymore

i would really be careful with those pieces....please make sure you are with them while they are eating them......

Be careful with the pieces??? They're little chips for like rabbits, etc. I feel the greenies are very safe the way they're made now.. and the chips are so small you can barely see them:confused:

To each his own, but after choking on a Greenie and a trip to the ER, Toto will never have another one. :thumbdown:thumbdown We have never been so frightened in our lives. She is fine but when I remember that night [about 3 years ago], it's just as scary as it was then ... you always think of the "what if's".

To answer the OP's question, Greenies ARE NOT necessary and they present a risk that I am not willing to take. My dogs love them and I used to feed them regularly before I learned about the dangers of Greenies. After talking with my vet, and they have seen Greenie victims, I decided that the risk wasn't worth it. I threw them away.

The company that produces Greenies was well aware that there was a problem with the original formula long before they were pulled from the shelves. I do not trust the makers of Greenies nor will I knowingly support any company who products that are dangerous to my dogs. Supposedly the New Greeneies are safe, but why take a chance when there are so many safe alternatives available.
