Negatives for feeding EVO???? OK...Max has been eatting EVO Turkey and CHicken for 7 months now. He is 10 months old. I read on the board that the high fat and high protein in EVO could be bad for him. IS THIS TRUE? :confused: I am so confused as to what I should feed him. I have been trying New Balance and Wellness Small Breed but now with the thread we having going about people finding the sharp bones in both companies fish varieties how can I trust either of those companies which are both supposed to be good foods?????:confused::confused: |
evo is an excellent food. it is only bad when you dog is already sick with liver problems as high protein is bad for pups with liver problems. I used to feed Evo to Tumi when we first got her and I liked it. We just decided to go raw and homecook as my girls are picky with kibbles. High protein is not a bad thing. |
Evo is wonderful food. High protein is much healthier for them. The only issue with Evo is that you really have to watch the portion size otherwise your dog can put on weight. Most people feed less that what the package recommends at first. |

In my opinion, it is okay but nothing special. Some dogs don't seem to do well on the kibble but that can happen with any food. There is some concern with fat content but that really applies more so to the canned. I wouldn't give the canned to Yorkies at all. A food that high in fat just seems too likely to trigger pancreatitis. The kibble is moderate fat but higher than most other common kibbles. The Wellness and NB bone scare is upsetting but then isn't Natura/Innova involved in a lawsuit (don't know the outcome) in Florida? I'm not sure there is any dog food including homecooked that is perfectly safe. :( |
Would feeding less also apply to Orijen food(s)? I have changed mine from Natural Balance to Nature's Variety raw but Huckleberry really likes his kibble. I was thinking that I would offer them both and wanted to give the Orijen a try. To the OP...it is so tough these days to find a food that we are comfortable with, isn't it?! :( Tammy |
It's probably worth noting that sometimes very high protein isn't that great for an animal either. If a pet's kidneys are not particularly strong, it can be problematic for those organs. Really, the best pet food is a food that works well for YOUR particular dog. I'm a big proponent of people doing regular bloodwork on their pets just to keep on top of these sorts of things-- I had a pet who was on EVO for a while and looked to be doing great until I had some bloodwork run, and it turned out his kidney values were elevated-- the protein level in the food was just too high for him. EVO is a great food for a lot of animals, but not all of them. |
I have Max on a 50/50 mix of Wellness Small Breed and Natural Balance Ultra until I decide which of the 2 to choose from. Feeding should not be this big a decision (in my opinion) :( I wish all foods were "safe". |
