Ear Scratching Baxter keeps scratching his ears to the point that his hair falls out. We use the oatmeal shampoo and bathe him once a week. I dont think its dry skin, does anyone have an idea what this could be?? |
Are you cleaning them and getting any colored gunk out? Do they smell? When you bathe him, do you put cotton balls in his ears? How old is he? |
His ears smell fine. The groomer cleans his ears when he goes, every 4 weeks. I don't put cotton in his ears when we bath him. He is 2 years old. |

his diet is a low protein prescription diet, and he sees the vet regularly. i did find one scab on his ear, but nothing else. |
My Chewy used to scratch her ears....the vet put her on a non allergenic dog food and she's MUCH better. She hardly scratches now. She used to get ear infections at least twice a year. Now she doesn't get any. Also, right after the bath, I put ear cleaner in her ears and then clean it out. She used to be loaded with wax....now it's nothing there. The qtip comes out clean! Amazing! |
I'll try the ear cleaner, are there any brands that are better than the others? |
Do you have the name of the food? If is contains beef, corn, soy or wheat (among lots of other things), it may be an allergy. I use Chlorhexiderm Flush but I don't think it's specific to the ears. |
I've heard of putting cotton balls in the ears, I never have, as I've watched them when they get groomed, and they have never put anything in their ears. Is there a reason you're bathing him so frequently? Unless he's just filthy, I wouldn't bathe him every week, myself. Mine of course are pee pad trained, and are bathed every few weeks(like 10-12 weeks), never have a problem with oily looking hair and they never stink. I would suggest getting an ear cleaner from the vet, I have one that I use occasionally that I got from mine, it's for the wax |
Aside from the other suggestions you've received, have you looked to see if the groomer is plucking the hair from inside the ear. If it's left to grow, it can drive some dogs nuts. |
I got my ear cleaner from the vet also. And yes you have to pluck the hairs in their ears as the hairs provide warmth and moisture leading to infections. FYI. I also bathe mine e very week. I like them squeaky clean as they sleep with us etc. JMO |
