Hair loss due to fleas - rescue dog The 5 yr old male yorkie I recently rescued has lost the hair on the back half of his body - from the last rib to his little nub-tail! The rescue place told me he was terribly flea infested when they got him and had already lost his hair. He has been vet-checked and they said it is definitely due to the fleas he had. He's currently on FrontlinePlus. His hair does seem to be starting to grow in, slowly. Is there anything I can do or give him to promote healthy hair growth? DH suggests (jokingly) suggests rogaine! I feel sorry for the little guy - it's so cold outside when he goes to potty...:cold smil |
I don't know for sure if this would work but you could try giving an omega-3 supplement. I know it helps improve the quality of the coat so I don't see why it wouldn't help it grow. Just make sure the supplement also contains vitamin E, to help break down the omega-3s. A good supplement is EicosaDerm by DermaPet. Oh, and get him a sweater! ;) |
LOL Yes he has hoodies and sweaters...but they don't go to all the way to his tail! I keep a belly band on him quite a bit too. And he's still so skinny, his bare little bottom is a sight to behold, for sure. Thank you for the suggestion - I'll look for that tomorrow. :) |

I forgot to post where you could find it. "DermaPet" Eicosaderm 8 oz (230 ml) |
After battling fleas and the nasty flea dermatitis for years we switched all our babies from frontline plus to comfortis and haven't had a single flea since. Especially Maggie is very allergic to fleas and had a lot of suffering to endure with baths, shots, pills and lotions etc...etc... Now she has the most beautiful hair growing back... I only whished we would have had comfortis as long as Mitzi was still alive... we could have saved her a lot of pain and disconfort... :( |

3V caps are great for boosting the immune system and improving the coat. 3V Caps Skin Formula for Small DOG & CATS (60 caps) Did your vet do a thyroid panel to make sure he doesn't have a thyroid imbalance? That can cause hair loss. |
God bless you for rescuing a little bald baby!! After getting a full blood panel, I would make sure you get him on the highest quality food you can, with the omega fatty acids as a supplement. Poor thing, but again bless you for saving that little angel- I'll bet he thinks he's died and gone to heaven! |
I'd like to see pics so we can watch his transformation. |

Just to clarify, does the little guy have fleas NOW? Because Comfortis is a flea preventative, not a coat growth supplement.... |
