Help .. Hand Fed Yorkie .... ARGH! So about a week ago, Gucci hadn't eaten so I got his food from his dish and was playing a game with him and hand feeding him.. all went well and he ate. That day he wanted to be hand fed ALL DAY, which was fine by me so we played our little food game for the rest of his feedings. The next day , he ate breakfast and then came lunch and he wouldn't touch it.. he would go to the bowl and sniff around, move the pieces with his nose but he wouldn't eat. So I again fed him by hand and he was excited to eat that way. Fast forward .. ALL WEEK he has only eaten maybe 2 meals on his own and I had to bribe him by putting two blobs of nutrical mixed in water on the food and stirring it around! I don't understand why he is doing this, he will go ALL DAY without eating (as proven yesterday) If I don't hand feed him and that worries me  .. I am worried if I am not home he won't eat. I am at a loss and don't know what to do to get him to eat again.... He can't go on only being hand fed... or can he? I don't know why he started doing this nor do I know why it appeals to him, does he think it's fun? or bonding? or something else? Any Suggestions....??? Happy Holidays and Thanks in Advance!! |
My advice... stop hand feeding him. He's getting used to you feeding him like that. If you don't do it, he'll eat when he's hungry enough. Hand feeding him because he's not eating because he's getting spoiled is like giving your kid the toy they want after throwing a tantrum over it in KBToys. |

That's what I was figuring, but I was worried since he's only 15 weeks old.. Is he okay to go without eating? I don't think he is because earlier in the week when he did this (went without eating as I wouldn't hand feed) .. he got really sleepy and didn't want to play .. I immediately gave him nutri-cal and hand fed him about 15 - 25 minutes later he was up and around as usual. I was worried he was having a bit of a Hypoglycemic episode, he's never had one before and I've never witnessed it first hand but he was up and about after the nutri-cal and feeding. I just don't know if it's safe tp let him not eat... |
He is doing it because you are letting him. :) Stop hand feeding him, if you really feel he is going down give him nutrical by placing a blob on the roof of his mouth to give him the nutrition but still allow him to eat on his own . Yorkies are smart and tough little cookies... :) |
ii am going thru the exact same thing! & its so hard around the holidays bc i am very busy with shopping and i have to go to familys house tonight and tomorrow. i am worried he wont eat while im gone but ive noticed that he does pick at the food when he gets hungry.. i just dont know if its enough.. ughh we need answers!! why do they do this? he is stressing me out also.. |

i agree that your baby will get use to being hand fed all the time and not eat independentaly. you got to encourage him to do that. He will be too dependant on you guys, and that is what you do nopt want . He can learn . Leave food down for him at all times, and fresh water. Be sure he knows where the food is, and praise him when he does eat on his own. |
Our boys get 'hand fed' every night by daddy. Actually he calls it baseball & they run for grounders & fly balls. They have a blast...plus they get a bit of exercise in. Keegen has started to 'ask' for that at breakfast, when I feed them. It's fun & if it make my little guy happy, I'm all over it! |
This dosent fix the problem about not eating out of the bowl but insted of hand feeding maybe this would work. Callie has a ball that treats fall out of and a treat stick that does the same thing and when she wont eat we will put a few treats in there but mostly pieces of her dog food and she eats them when they fall out one at a time. They have to work for them so its like a game. Maybe that would help so you would have to hand feed him if you were busy? |
