Stinky ears Hi all I just found this site today, it looks like it will be very informitive. I have a question. My yorkie Maggie, the big one, has smelly ears, I bath her every 9-10 days and pay close attention to her ears, and yet they still smell, they don't look bad, has anyone else experienced this? And is there a Over the counter medicine that can help? Thankyou very much:aimeeyork |

Bentley had an odor coming from his ears and would scratch his ears a lot. I took him to the vet and they found that he had a yeast infection in his ears! They gave me a cleaner that I had to use to clean his ears everyday...he didn't like it at all. But now, I just have to clean his ears twice/week as precautionary (the yeast infection is gone) and he is used to the cleaning. They also told me to not get water in his ears while bathing him and to put cotton balls in his ears when bathing him just in case. Also, make sure the water he is drinking is fresh and clean everyday. Hope this helps. |
I agree. The culprit, according to my vet, is usually water in the ears at bathtime. My vet gave me a cleaner to use after bathing that has alcohol of some sort in it. It actuaslly dries the ear out in the event water has gotten in there. I don't use it after every bath, but I use it at the first sign of "stinky ears" and the odor is gone in a day or so. Hope this helps! |
It most likely is a yeast infection. Your vet will prescribe anti fungal drops and an ear cleaning solution. I was surprised at how far into the ear we have to go with a q-tip to get the wax buildup out (if infection, its a really brown color) Also, my vet plucked some hair from down inside the ear. |
When I got mine she seemed fine, no smell or scratching her ears at all. I took her in for some shots and the vet said she had the start to an ear infection, I had no idea, to the untrained eye you really dont know what your looking for. Luckily I got some medicine and it cleared right up, the medicine from the vet wasn't all that expensive for a big bottle. I would take her in. |
My Wylie had this for ages - and the vet kept saying the ears looked fine. Finally went to a new vet and she thought there was too much "gunk" deep within. She didn't even want to bother culturing it, she just gave me a broad spectrum ear ointment that would treat WHATEVER was in there, whether it was an infection or yeast or whatever. One round of treatment - and boom, his ears have been completely different ever since. :) |
Hi, Could you please give a name of cleanser? Thanks |
Thankyou all very much for your replies. I will take her to the vet ASAP. I hate to think that she could be in any pain. I know when I get an ear infection it's pretty painful, and thanks for the cotton ball I dea, I try and keep water out but I know it does seep in. Again thanks and Happy Holidays to you all, Diana |
The cleaning solution my vet gave me is CLORHEXI DERM FLUSH. |
:thumbup: I would bet it's yeast infection too! Our Toto never complains about anything and Patrick smelled that "yeast" smell and upon taking her to her vet we found that it was a yeast infection. The vet couldn't believe that she hadn't been scratching or shaking her head it was so bad. I felt soooo bad, but had no way of knowing. I regularly take her in to have the hair plucked from inside her ears and I use ear plugs when I bathe her. Good luck. |
do you have special earplugs, and where can I get them? |
I found a site that advocates Apple Cider Vinegar to help with ear infections. It's E A R T H . C L I N I C - Folk Remedies and Holistic Cures. It certainly helped with Misa's conjunctivitis! |
My Tia sometimes gets smelly ears so I asked the vet about it and he said there was no infection but just clean them once a week with ear wipes there only a couple of quid from your pet shop, hope this helps. :Pawprint:yorkies leave paw prints on our hearts |
sounds like we all have the same answers :) Bobby gets stinky ears if there is too much hair in his ears. And if water gets in there when cleaning. My vet gave us cleaning solution to use whenever exposed to water and the smell stays away. |
