Female yorkie after spay....any advice??? Hi...I just got my baby spayed and along with that 2 minor teeth extracted, and a skin biopsy. Actual surgery was 3 days ago and I brought her home 2 days ago. She is eating, but not TONS, is sleeping a lot, and trembly when she is awake and I am paying attention to her. Is this behavior normal after surgery? I am starting to get a little worried...and may call the Vet tomorrow just to make sure but I was wondering what your experience was and if I am just being a worry bug (ie: a Mother! Lol). Thanks everyone, this is a great community. |
What pain med is she on? Is she drinking and pottying okay? |
Vet didn't prescribe any pain med, I figure she thought se did not need any. In fact she doesn't seem to be in pain, is moving about ok, just seems a little lethargic, perhaps it's the after effects of the anaesthesia, still lingering? Drinking and potty are regular...maybe just a little less frequent since she is sleeping more. I also noticed that she seems more depressed when she is wearing the cone. Has anyone ever noticed this????? |
It sounds to me like she is in pain given the trembling, lethargy and depression. Both of my girls had pain pills prescribed around the clock for several days post op. Those were the symptoms my Gracie had after her LP surgery, when she was due for more pain meds. I don't mean to make you feel bad, but how would you feel if you had a hysterectomy and was not prescribed any pain medication? I would expect her to start acting more like her old self by now. Does the incision look OK? I would call the vet and discuss your concerns and request some pain meds if all else seems okay. Until then, can you try putting an ice pack next to her incision (wrapped in a towel of course)? I hope your baby feels better soon. |
Most dogs do very well wearing a baby onesie instead of a cone as long as they don't try to bite through it. Some vets don't prescribe pain meds because they think that the dog will feel too good and get hyper, however, pain meds can make them sleepy which is a good thing and, unless there is an underlying medical condition that makes pain meds dangerous, it seems really unfair to the dog to cut into its abdomen without prescribing meds. That is, in a way, like a female having a hysterectomy without meds. It would be extremely painful. Shaking is a sign of pain along with depression and some dogs try to hide it. She could very well be hurting. I would insist on meds. |
Ok now I am worried! She is sleeping most of the time, which I assume is a good thing because that means she is trying to recover, but now I am paranoid that she is in pain but not showing it....she really does not seem to be in pain......anyhow i will def. call the vet tomorrow. She only trembles a little bit when I put on or take off the cone, like she's afraid something might happen...same trembles she gets when she;s excited for example when I give her her soft food in the morning and she can't wait to eat it. The sutures look perfect, no sign whatsoever of infection or problems. |
1 Attachment(s) We bought a cat donut looking thing after our Jaxter was neutered and he was doing all his regular things that same day. We had to hold him down at times because we didn't want him to hurt himself. Just felt like sharing since you said the shaking happens with the cone. The picture was taken as soon as we got home from the vet. |
Callie was given 4 days worth of pain meds. I only gave it the first day because she didnt need it. No shaking or extra sleeping. She did not wear the cone. Maybe the cone is causing anxiety. Callie was bouncing around the second day like nothing happened. |

I adopted a 1 1/2 yr old named Callie the day after Thanksgiving. I will send you a link to her pic. Don't wanna hijack the thread. |
I just got my Bella spayed yesterday and had 3 teeth extracted, so I definitely understand your concern. And I hope your little beauty is healing well. But I would speak with your vet. Bella is taking pain medicine 3 times per day. She is getting around very well and I suppose we will take her off in a couple of days. One reason the vet said that she needed to be on the meds was that she will be less likely to bother her incision because she will not feel it as well. (I don't know how true that is for my little girl because she still is mesmerized by her owie :p). Also my Bella hates her cone, so my mother made her a onesie so that she will be more comfortable, but still not able to irritate her incision. She is running around today and acting herself. So I pray that your little one will recovery quickly as well. Hope this helps! :) |
