Human Food?
 

I looked around the Health and Diet Thread, and I found some human food, that can be hazardous, but I didn't find many that can be okay, for a yorkie. I'm planning on getting a yorkie pup, around Christmas, or after, and I was wondering, if I could feed her human food? If so, what types?
I've heard of taking baby carrots, and cutting it into tiny little pieces, but what else?

Is there any dog food that you would recommend?

There are a lot of things that are okay for dogs! Actually, most human food is fine! There are a lot of people who actually cook meals for their dogs but if you're looking for treats I would stick to things like fruits and veggies. Franklin and Maggie LOVE apples, carrots, cucumbers, cheese, and peanut butter. You could also give little pieces of boiled chicken. Just be careful to give everything in moderation! Mine have never had any issue with human food but I've heard of dogs getting diarrhea from apples, etc.

how do you feed them fruits and vegetables? i try to give milu carrots and fruits and other vegetables, but she doesnt know how to eat it. she would chew on it and it would fall out of her mouth i think (or maybe she spits them out?)

Mine get whole baby carrots and little slices of apples or cucumbers. They just love them. If your baby is spitting them out she probably doesn't like them. Are you looking for food for meals or just as treats?

I give mine healthy food but gosh they still get a taste of my breakfast sometimes (a tiny bite of pancake or a frosted flake :)) Actually Cherrios are good treats for puppies.

Just give "people" food away from the table. Actually feeding off your plate will encourage begging. We go sit over on our stairs and make them sit or do tricks for their "ration" Also be careful when preparing your dinner if you plan to share. I prefer to cook their food separately because I often cook with onions and garlic and sauces and butter. So if I'm cooking Chicken Parmesan I just cut off a hunk of chicken before I start cooking and bake it in the toaster oven. Then they get plain chicken. Cheese is GREAT for giving medicine -I call it the cheese chaser! Wrap the pill in a small piece of cheese. Then show them a BIG hunk of cheese (big for a Yorkie anyway!) Feed the pill, then follow up immediately with the big hunk. They will be SO excited about the big piece they will swallow that pill! I found if I just gave them the pill+cheese they would run away and go spit it out (but then eat the cheese of course!)

Eggs are good, rice..... green beans... my dogs love food :D

Spicy food
Grapes
Raisins
Onions
Chocolate
Anything with seeds
No fatty food

They love:
Apples (great for the liver)
Oranges
Strawberries
Blueberries
Broccoli
Spinach
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Cherrios
Crispex
Watermelon (great for the liver)
Carrots
Snap peas
Frozen peas

One thing you also need to remember, you give them too much human food, you end up having a "picky eater". Mine mostly get their dog treats in the morning, and occasionally a carrot or 1 or 2 pieces of apple(no skin), anymore than 2 or 3 pieces of apple, can cause diarrhea, as I found out the hard way with 4 of them..:(

As a new puppy, you don't want to give too much variety. I would feed the same thing as the breeder fed for the first week to be sure if any problems the dog may have are not food related. Remember if you add too much of a new food, your dog will probably display digestion difficulties, which can include diarrhea, so go easy when introducing new food. I agree with the above poster, that too much human food can cause them to become picky, and Yorkies are picky anyway. If you decide to use human food, instead of dog food, please do some research on the best combination. Most people here who home cook, add supplemental vitamins as well, to insure that their dog is getting a rounded diet.

Wow thanks! I heard that rice is good for the bowels, and that omelette's are good for their coats.
I'm planning on going to the pet store this weekend, or maybe next weekend, to get food supplies for the dog. Any good Yorkie dog food recommendations?

We love Innova EVO Small Bites here!

I use Royal Canine for Yorkshire terriers, and the RC's small bite puppy food when Joey was a puppy, this isn't considered one of the best foods by many, but Joey's doing well on it, and I like it for a variety of reasons. Joey didn't care for many of the so-called "best foods." There are lots of disagreements on what makes the best food; I personally believe that any premium food you buy is probably ok. Dogs are wonderfully adaptive to a variety of diets, and there is probably no one best food, but what works for your dog, and your lifestyle. I feel stronger about limiting unhealthy snacks, and not overfeeding, no matter which brand you choose.

:thumbup: We go the reguar Innova Small Bites. We have issues with EVO but it's great food, especially for a puppy!

I'm curious what issues you have with EVO. Maybe I should switch?

Nothing too bad - Loki gained some weight and he never felt full on it so i felt bad feeding him less. Sammy was fine (she is a skinny butt anyway) other than an occasional morning bile puke, which she also did on Canidae so at the time I thought it was just sorta normal for her. We switched from Evo to Canidae and then to regular Innova when Canidae did a formula change and her puking stopped so I'm sticking with Innova! They don't seem to be allergic to rice (we never had any difference in scratching/licking w/ Evo or Orijen vs Canidae & Innova - plus I feed them fresh rice all the time because they love it) and their digestion seems to be better with the Innova.

They also get cooked food, supplements and canned food so kibble is only 50-75% of their diet depending on how busy I am, but they always get it for breakfast.
