Anal Glands.... I was wondering how many of you have your baby's anal glands cleaned? My Brooklyn is a year old and has only had her anal glands cleaned once. It was when I took her to the groomers when she was about 5 months old. Since then I have learned to groom her myself. However, I don't clean her anal glands, I don't know how to, and don't know if I should? My sister in law has a yorkie and she has her anal glands cleaned every 6 weeks. She said her groomer told her it should be done often. I would appreciate any advice on this that you have!! THANKS sooo much!!! |
My dog was not a Yorkie, but he was a small breed. We had his anal glands cleaned at least once a year, more as he got older. You could always tell when they were bothering him, because he would rub his butt on the carpet. I've heard of people doing it themselves, but I would never have had the guts to do it.. our vet never really charged much for it, think it was like $20. I think it depends on the dog as to how often - once ever 6 weeks seems like it's too much to me, unless the dog shows symptoms of needing it done - however, I am no vet. |
My yorkie had his done yesterday by the vet....he was scooting his butt.....the vet explained that some dogs could have this done once and never need to again.....while some must be done regularly......not sure the reason why.......great idea to learn how to do it......my vet charged $33.....someone had once posted on here how to do.....I have not been able to find the thread. |
It's something that can be easy or hard. Depending on your fur baby. Just a fair warning it will smell... REALLY BAD. The first time I did it (i'm a bather) I gagged. Hold your breath and wash it all away. lol I say do it externally and leave the internal expression to the vets. Here's a good link Anal Glands - structure, impact and expression You can find a bunch of videos if you google "anal glad expression" and select the video option. I think this will help you a lot and save you a lot of money. My vet charges $18 for it! |
