Reasons for butt-scooting? Please remind me that there are reasons, other than worms, for butt-scooting. :( I just caught KaCee scooting down the hallway! I am calling the vet to make an appointment as we speak! |

Well his bottom could be itchy! He could have had a dingleberry or it may mean that his anal glands need to be expressed. Please keep us updated! Hugs! |

It's usually anal glands. The vet or your groomer should express them. |

Yes anal glands could be too full. Joey had this problem as a puppy, and I had to laugh when I saw him scooting, but his face looked so pitiful. The vet explained to me that some dogs have trouble emptying the glands after pooping, and the glands become too full. There will be a slight puffiness around the anal area. He showed me how to empty the glands, and it must be done correctly or you could push the contents further in, and this could lead to impaction. This use to be a routine step in grooming, but most vets don't recommend this unless it's necessary. Joey did the little scoot about every 2 weeks, and finally outgrew the condition at about 6 months. Adding a little fiber to the diet might help too, if it's a reoccurring thing. |

Well, I can't find my cell phone...how do I always manage to lose it?! I think I'm going to wait and watch her for awhile. Maybe it was just an itch! |

If she has worms you will see it. Check her bedding and her behind. Recently toby I guess had eaten a flea somewhere (probably when I took him to be neutered) and it turned into tapeworms. I saw him scoot but thought it might be a dingle berry. Well later that night when he was laying near me I saw something that looked like a grain of rice on him..then after further inspection I found a few more near his bum and on his tail. I never experienced that before so I thought it could have been something he sat on in the yard and it got stuck to his coat . Well nope turned out it was tapeworms. So keep a good eye. If it's tape worms there are over the counter meds you can treat him with and avoid the vet. I am making it a practice every 3 months to worm my guys. Normally if you give dry food it helps to keep them regularly emptying out their anal sacs. |

It was probably her anal glands but worms can't be ruled out without a fecal. A dog would have to scoot her smell quite a bit before I'd empty the glands because in some cases over-emptying can do more harm than good but leaving them too long can create infection. Use your best judgement. You can empty them at home if you want but I'd watch a demo online first at the least... |

Thank you for all of your comments! I love knowing that I can turn to YT when I need advice.:) As far as I know, her anal glands have never been expressed unless the groomer has did it and not told me-but I doubt that. She's a little over a year old. Dry kibble is all that she eats so I had assumed that her "hard poo" is taking care of it. I WILL be looking for those tapeworm segments though. Currently, I am pleased to report that the butt-scooting has ceased and she is peacefully napping at my feet. We'll see how long that lasts! |

I still think it's an anal gland problem, and even eating just hard kibble is no guarantee against it, in fact that's all Joey ate when he had the problem. One member wrote that her dog never had a problem, (there was no scooting and glands were never expressed) until it was so serious that the glands were impacted and infected, and required extensive surgery. Look for a little puffiness around the area, and most vets don't charge much for doing, but I sure wouldn't ignore it. |

Smokey scoots his butt if he has a poopy stuck to his butt (which you already said wasn't the case), or if his little bum is itchy, or when he's wet and drying to dry off. Like everyone else said, it could be anal glands. I would watch and see if she scoots more. It might have just been an itch and they have no way of scratching. |

If KaCee eats a lot of can or moist food, you may want to change her diet to dry kibbles. It's better for her teeth and digestion system. |
