List of safe chew toys you use? I usually buy bully sticks, but they are so darn expensive. Triss is still a pup, 8 months old, so I need to keep a stock of chew toys on hand. I need some more ideas. I do have a kong, but I'm looking for chew things they can actually digest, like bully sticks. |
I personally don't give edible snacks. A member on here almost lost her dog after the dog ingested bacteria that grew on a chewed bully stick. I stick with plastic bones that I can put in the dishwasher. |
While bully sticks appear to be the safest for the choking hazard issue, as Marci said, animal products do have the potential to hold nasty bacteria. I don't like plastic-type bones either though because if any pieces are chewed off, that is very unsafe. Then you have Nylabones. They are nylon and sometmes rubber and pieces can come off. I don't really think that's a healthy snack. If my dog wasn't liver compromised, I might consider giving bullies but I'd probably take away after an hour or so and not let it get wet, dry, and then let them chew on it again. We give raw veggies here. |
I like to use Sam's Yams, Bichon Fries (Sam's yams in french fry form) or raw carrots. If Max getsd USA rawhide I recycle it fast. He gets it a day or 2 and then I throw it away. I try my best not to give foreign country rawhide. |
I have used rawhides , bully sticks, dental Nylabones, edible Nylabones, the super-hard plastic Nylabones, flexible Nylabones, and flossies. I will never use rawhides again.....they are too dangerous! I won't ever use bully sticks again either, because though they are safest and Bella loves them, they are so disgusting (plus she has liver issues now too)! She chewed them and instantly they were wet, making a wet, stinky spot wherever she was chewing....my lap!, the couch!...all places I don't want bully stick wet on! The dental Nylabones (they are blue...like this Nylabone Dental Dog Chew at PETCO) she LOVED but would start chewing the spiny things off pretty quickly, which aren't supposed to be ingested....so I don't buy these anymore either because it's too expensive for her to only get to chew one day and then have to throw away. Edible Nylabones left her paws gunky (plus whatever she was chewing on)...yuck-o! No more of those either! Some of the Nylabones aren't flexible....they're super, super hard (most of them say Action Chew in their title I think)!! I don't get these anymore because I don't want her to break a tooth...that would not be good! The flexible Nylabones are my fave!! (PETCO.com they come separately too, not just in a pack of 2 or 3) AND she's had one since the day I got her that she LOVES and carries around (it's clear, so it's harder for me to find....I'll only get the white ones from now on!) It has no chew marks on it at all, and she has absolutely chewed it to death....but it still looks almost as good as when it was still in the package! She also loves her flossies! She chews and chews and chews and also tugs and tosses and plays with them! Not only are they a great toy, but they are a great chew too! So, all she gets for chewing now (besides her toys of course) are Nylabone flexible chews and flossies. |
Have you tried the bully sticks from eddieb260 on eBay - SUPER cheap!! I don't think any chew is completely safe. But, I give Bully Stix, Canine Caviar Stix, Duck Chews, Sweet Potato Chews, and RMBs. |

The reason I'm asking for 'edible' things is when I've bought the plastic or nylon "indestructable" bones in the past my other dog, a daschund, breaks them into peices. He is a powerful chewer so I need to keep things around that are safe for him too. |

Btw, I get either the 1-7" size mix or the 2-7" size mix; the larger ones I often cut in half. The 2lb. bag is $25 and it lasts me 1/2 a year if not longer. :) |

I know some people peel sweet potatoes and then cut them into long 1/4" or 1/2" thick strips, put them on foil sprayed with olive oil, and bake them at 200-250 for an hour, then turn them and bake for another hour. You have to watch them so they don't burn, but you can cook them until they are the texture you want. I haven't tried this yet for Bella, but I plan to. She likes sweet potato and other veggies, so this sounds like it will be a nice little chew stick for her.....this isn't something ready-made, but maybe yours would like it too? |
When Buddy was younger I gave him raw hide chews and nylabones. He was and still is an aggressive chewer. He got sick from the above and all he get's now are white natural bones. They are all over the house and he chews continuiously on them. Safe and nothing to ingest. I don't trust anything else on the market. |

What company makes them? Are they made in the US? Can I make them myself? Sorry for all the questions but they sound promising. |

We get them at our natural pet food store. Max likes the Veggie Rawhide (bigger yams) and Bichon Fries (smaller french fry cut size yams). I could not live without these! He LOVES these!!!! :animal36 YUM! I love that they are all natural...just dried Yams. |
What are flossies? After reading these posts I threw out all the rawhide strips. We have 2 female 1-1/2 yr olds we got on 12/19 - need help with picking out safe things for them to chew on. Also, what are greenies? |
