So we're in the same boat :( Sorry I don't have any good advise but I'm glad to know someone who is also experiencing the same problem with they're furbaby. |
well hopefully we can get some good help from this forum, im new to the yorkies, ive had bigger dogs but never ran into a dry skin situation:thumbdown |
Hello! Baxter is 2 months old, and I just recently took him to the vet. He had really dry skin on his neck, and at first I thought it was a skin disease. I was so worried at first! The vet checked him out, and he said it was only dry skin. He gave me some shampoo(Aloe and Oatmeal Shampoo) and said that it should help with it. He also said to only bathe Baxter once a month. Well, I bathed Baxter today, (like and hour ago, actually) and already I notice a difference. I can't feel anything on his neck. I'm not sure if it's just the shampoo, because the vet said it will simply go away. Hope that helps some! |
maybe that could be the reason we give him a bath atleast twice a week, hes an inside dog , so i guess he will have to be stinky for a while until we see if that helps any |
Oh yeah, that's probably why then. If he's an inside dog, he shouldn't get TOO stinky. Baxter never really smelt bad, but he was scratching a lot lately, and I thought the bath with the shampoo would help... and it did! Anyways, good luck! |
becareful with dry skin I have a tiny little girl I thought she had ringworm or some type of mange, I have done skin scraping over and over never any answer. switched shampoos , switched what I washed her clothes in but it never got any better, This has went on since June. Last week she was getting worse she had large patches of hair lost and her whole body feltlike it was covered with little scabs. I rushed to the vet for more skin scraping and medicine this time. Today I received word from the vet she has a staph infection. Now all I can do is pray and only time will tell. I hope yours is just the shampoo. Please don't take it lightly though:cry::angel: |
his skin is nice n smooth just has flakes, looks like dandruff but im assuming its dry skin, imma hold back on the baths, hope it works, |
Olivia had flakes from her skin in her coat when I first got her, no matter how much I brushed her she still had flakes. I got some of the Petz-Life Cranberry Fields Oatmeal shampoo and conditioner from a yt member and have been using it for a month or so - it has made such a difference! No more flakes and her coat looks just great. The shampoo/conditioner is the only change I made, no changes to food etc. Now I get to work on the new little boy's skin, same flakey skin problem! |
Dry skin? Molly has been scracthing to. Her skin don`t seen to be dry but it must be. She bites by her tail alot. Got some oatmeal shampoo for her but didn`t seem to help much. Tried to change her food . Also got some salamon oil but she won`t eat her food if i put that on. That was waste of money. So i`m going to the vet an see what he says. So i hope some one else has an answer. Might try some different shampoo. Wish we could get samples some times an see what works the best. I keep trying different ones. |
Arnies, I know what you mean. The vet gave me a sample of shampoo that they had to try and he said it would help. Baxter has still been scratching around his neck, but not nearly as bad as he normally did. Also, what really surprised me, was the vet said I could use my own shampoo on Baxter! Of course, he said it had to be light shampoo, like baby shampoo, but that that would suffice. I was so surprised! I'm still using the shampoo he gave me(Aloe and Oatmeal shampoo) to see if it works, first though. Good luck with your itchy pup! |
dry skin There are many reasons why a dog can have dry skin so it is kind of like a process of stopping things and trying other things. Try using a detergent free shampoo. Hylite Shampoo and conditioner is a very good product and usually you can get it at your vets office. Dogs need the grease they produce unlike us we want a shampoo to get rid of it. If this does not work it could be an allergy to the food your feeding, your own perfume or many other things. |
Itiching I know she is miserable . Just finding out what the problem is. She is so picky about her food. She eats the holistic nutrition. It`s chicken , salmon, & lamb in gravy. She has ate it for awhile. She will be 1 year next month. She hasn`t scracthed like she is now just seemed to started. I think i`m going to try an give her hot oil treatments an seem if that helps. They do have hair instead of fur. Just hate for my baby to be so miserable. Maybe some one has an answer. He skin doesn`t look dry. Maybe an allergy ? |
Chester also has dry skin and the itchies from enviromental, I use grizzly salmon oil every day on his wet food which has helped. I also put him in the tub and just rinse him off especially if he has been in the wet grass. I use hypoallergenic shampoo when he gets bathed at petsmart and I use tearless puppy shampoo at home. I use all free and clear laundry soap and perfume free dryer sheets. You can brush them to get the oil glands going and I just use his flea comb which can help as well. They are sensitive little burgers. |
Itichie skin I got molly some salmon oil an tried putting it on her food she wouldn`t touch her food. She is really picky. Is peanut butter good for them. I an trying the pumpkin . She did eat some of that. Thought maybe her glands could cause of this. She was scooting some to. U are right they are sensitive. But love her so much. |

Thanks for telling me about the peanut butter . Better stick to her dog food. Just want to get her scratching under control. Her skin don`t look dry . It seems odd when she is sleeping in my arms she doesn`t itch. Let her down then she starts scratching again. She really just started this. I will get something to help her. Gosh u girls are lots of help. |
I've had very good luck with Allergroom Shampoo. The link I've provided below is simply to show the product but you can google it to find more information. I have never ordered from them. Many vets carry this shampoo and conditioner. Medicated Shampoo - Allergroom Shampoo (8oz) by VIRBAC |
thanks for this shampoo. will have to see if my vet carries this. i feel she needs something with moisture in it. she is doing a little better but still is scracthing some. |
A friend of mine has tried numerous shampoos for her dogs who also have a problem with dry itchy skin. She gave them one bath with Allergroom and saw a great improvement. I hope it works for you. They also have a conditioner. |
My little girl is 2yrs old, she too had very dry flakey skin. I changed her food to Natural Balance Allergy Formula which has limited ingredients and is grain free. Believe it or not her skin has cleared up. |
I would consider a fatty acid imbalance for skin problems. I really would encourage you to read this article: Omega Fatty Acids: Sources, Effects, and Therapeutic Usesin Dogs |
dry skin Thanks for the article fatty acids . What an interesting article. I think i will try some of the omega 3 on her. But i was looking at her the other nite an found a flea on her . Where at this time in indiana did that come from . So maybe her allergy is from the flea bite. Cause her skin doesn`t seem to be dry. So treated with flea stuff. Wash all of her bedding. Haven`t seen any more but she still is scratching. So think i will take her to the vet an have an allergy test run. What do u think? Gosh wish i had an easy answer. |
