How much food for my puppy? I have a new yorkie puppy, Hayley, and she is 12 weeks old. She is just under two pounds. About 1 3/4 lbs. I am trying to figure out how much to feed her daily. She is so little, and I worry about low blood sugar, so I am feeding he like four times a day. I don't want to over feed her, or under feed her. How do I know how much is just right, and should I only be feeding her 3 times a day?? What do you all recommend? THANKS! Hayley's new mom! |
My vet always recommends free-feeding when they are so young. |
I wish I could do that but she will eat herself into oblivion. Unfortunately I also have two other dogs who would eat all her food. But thanks so much for the reply!! |
hmmm i think if you are around to feed her four times per day, that is better than three especially since she is so young and small what food are you currently feeding her? i have found calling the customer service numbers for the companies are helpful (the nature's variety reps are awesome!)...perhaps they will be able to tell you how much to give her...and if you do not feel comfortable with the amount they tell you, maybe add on an extra 25% to what they tell you hope that helps a little :) |
txrosegirl, thanks so much for responding. I feed her pedigree (that is what the breeder was giving her). I will probably change her when she gets a little older. This Pedigree comes in these packets of chunks. She loves it. I feed her about a heaping tablespoon 4 times a day. I guess I will just keep doing what I am doing. Thanks again!! |

good luck with your baby :) |
I know that the 4 heaping tablespoons doesn't sound like much, but her tummy is nice and plump, and she is real happy and seems good. I will check with my vet to make sure. THANKS! |

I agree with this, puppies won't overeat, and this is the best way to prevent hypoglycemia. Don't worry about weight until after 8 months. Your bigger dogs should not have free access to your puppy anyway, don't you keep them separated? |

Nancy 1999, My two other dogs are only 8 lbs each - one is a full breed yorkie and the other a yorkie mix. They are very gentle with Hayley, and I don't have any worries there. Of course I do crate little Hayley by herself at night, and I don't work, so when they are all together I am at home with them. So far, all is good. Thanks! |
I just went through so much puppy routine with my Snickers who is now 5.5 months but we got him when he was 8 weeks and just under 2lbs as well. We started him on 3 times a day (6am/11:30am/5:30pm) feedings that were about 2 tablespoons mixed wet and dry food. This schedule helped alot to determine when he would poop. He was on Nutro so we gave him that and then read up how horrible Nutro was and then switched him to Merrick which he devoures now. He is now only 3 lbs and we just switched him to twice a day feedings (6am/5pm) on Merrick dry kibble and at noon he gets a snack of 2 all natural blueberry pumpkin biscuits. Please try to check the quality of the food you are giving him as Pedigree generally is not high on the list (Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble) as that will ensure good health for your baby!! |
Viviansnickers, thanks so much for the reply. It will be nice to get Hayley to twice a day feedings, but right now I guess I will stick to three. I am paranoid about her getting low blood sugar. I still wonder how much she will weigh when she is finished growing. I will probably switch her food when she is a year old. My older yorkie is on a low protein diet because of his liver problems, and she said it would be good to have hayley on it eventually - when she gets older. Take Care!! |
