Ears and breath smell horrible!
 

I just adopted a 4 month old, 3lb. baby boy and I didn't know something that small can smell so bad :eek:. I gave him a bath on Monday (when I brought him home), because my little girl kept smelling him, making what seemed to me as a 'how disgusting' sound, and walking away from him. She wouldn't go any where near him or any place he had touched! I did notice the smell but I didn't pay much attention to it.

But, yesterday I had to get to the bottom of this, so I gave him another bath, thinking that I mustn't have done a good job the first time. I washed everything as well (even my girl got a bath), he still smells bad, his bed, his pillow, everything he sits on retains that fowl, feet smell and my little girl continues to be offended by his odor. I'm paying attention now and the smell is from his ears and breath.

The breeder mention that she gives her pups a dash of garlic powder in their food and keeps them on a Holistic diet. Could this be the reason for the smell??? He also scratches his right ear--A LOT, and kind of whines when he does it. A friend of mine, poured a drop of vet-grade ear medicine in his ears, just in case it's mites (don't worry, she handles pups and knows about dogs). But he's still scratching, whining and smelling. I also have the 3 in 1 ear powder, and I used it the first night, but it didn't work.

The vet looked him over the same day I adopted him and said my boy looks fine. We have another appt. with the vet for next Friday for his booster shots and I'm bringing in a poop sample. Also, the breeder had him on IAMS, yellow bag, puppy food. Of course, I'm changing that.

How can I ease his discomfort until he sees the vet?

Sound like a ear infection to me...

Did you see the vet look in his ears? Most vets never check for ear infections and ear mites when you get them. I just took my little girl in the other day as she was rubbing hers, and she had an ear infection(both ears) so is on ear drops.
I'm not big on them getting garlic, it's really not good for them

The ear smell probably has to do with some kind of infection. The vest thing to do is go to the vet as quickly as possible.

The breath problem is probably from hiim retaining baby teeth while getting adult teeth in and food getting stuck in between. If the baby teeth don't fall out by about a year or before neutering if you plan to do that, they are usually pulled.

Wow! You are fast. Thank you for your quick response. It crossed my mind that it might be an ear infection, but the mites thing scared me because my friend said that if he has it, my little girl is sure to catch it.

Being that my girl has been on meds. recently. After her last round of shots, she got a cold and then had an upset stomach for which I had to put her on a special diet as well as meds. I was praying that I didn't have to give her any more for some time and let her system recuperate.

I didn't see the vet use an instrument to look in his ears and my friend said that you can't see them with the naked eye. So I guess that he wasn't checking for mites. I'll mention it on our appt.:animal-pa

Stinky face/eyes
 

Callie had smelly face. It was her tears. Her breath and ears smelled too. She doesnt get goopy eye boogs, just runny eyes and it smelled. Check to see if it is his eyes. She had a yeast infection in her ears and her teeth need cleaning. A Veterinary Opthomologist gave me Miconazole wipes to use on Callies eyes. The smell cleared up in a few days. She was on antibiotics and the Miconazole wipes so it might have been a combination of both that helped. Good luck with the stinky face. The wipes are called MALASEB towelettes. They say prescription on the box, but you can find them online without! For dogs cats and horses.

Yes, have him check the ears, thats one thing I've noticed vets never much do unless you ask them to check them or if you tell them their ears seem to be bothering them.

Wondering, why is garlic not good for them?

raw, cooked, or powder Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Garlic is less toxic than onions. Now, my grandma did use to give her dog a garlic pill everyday for fleas, but, it was a bigger dog. I have never given mine the pills. I just believe better safe than sorry.

I was wondering because I recently bought the Brewer's Yeast w/Garlic pills. I read it on another post here & it says helps alleviate sensitive/itchy skin. But I certainly don't want to give anything that will hurt her.

Thanks everyone. I heeded your advice and ask the vet for an emergency consultation. Nicky had an ear infection and his vet put him on Tresaderm for 3 weeks.
The vet said that this usually happens because of water in the ear doesn't evaporate in them as it does in ours. The hairs have to be plucked out so that air can flow in there.:thumbup:
