New Yorkie Owner! A few questions I just got my puppy from a breeder yesterday and when i brush him. a lot of "dandruff" comes out.. is this normal? what is the best product to use on him so that his skin wont be so dry? Also, how often should i bathe him.. and what are the rules when it comes to giving him a bath? TIA! |
I don't think that is normal. Probably the best thing to do is to take him in to the vet for a wellness check anyway to make sure he is healthy. I bathe mine about once every two weeks in the winter and once a week in the summer. Use a good quality shampoo like plush puppy, pet silk, etc and a good conditioner and rinse really well. then brush and blow dry especially since it is so cold now. Congratulations on your new baby |
he just got revolution.. does that made a difference about whether it is normal or not? |
Revolution shouldn't have anything to do with it. I have one of my girls that when she gets nervous, gets instant dandruff, the vet pointed it out to me. Could it be that? Is she on a quality food? |
shes on canidae.. i think i will give her a bath soon to see if that makes a difference! |
Maybe bathe her in an oatmeal shampoo or something with aloe vera in it. That is usually good for dry skin. |
Hi! Congrats on your new pup. I can't remember if you said how many weeks old your puppy is, but I am assuming it is quite young and tiny. I would use a oatmeal based puppy shampoo. I bathe my older yorkie about once every 2-3 weeks. I also have a 12 week old yorkie pup and I bathe her about once every 3 weeks because when they are that tiny I don't want to traumatize her too much. Definitely blow dry to keep away the chill since it is winter. Good luck! And I also agree that the first thing to do is get them right to a vet for a wellness check. The vet usually worms them and will tell you when your next round of shots is due. Pups get several rounds of shots. Hope this helps. |
Congrats!I live in NYC.. (Brooklyn) and we have lots of dogs..so i wash my pup once a week.. btwn baths i wipe him down with wipes before he steps foot on my floor. When you dont have your own yard and the side walk is everydogs potty i suggest more baths... if they are being trained on wee wee pads than the baths dont have to be as frequent!:animal-pa as for the flakes def do a oatmeal bath, dont forget to protect her ear when you bath! |
Great info, thanks! looks like oatmeal bathe for him it is!... what should I protect his ears with? |
