Help w/Rabies Shot Hello Everyone! Can you please tell me when your puppy received his rabies shot? Were there any side effects? Did anyone have their puppies rabies shot under 6 months and regret it? My vet wants to give this shot to him next week (he will only be 14 weeks) I think that this is way too soon so I did not make that appointment. I also was hoping that it may be safe to give it before 6 months so he is able to go to the groomers and also for protection. Do you think 5 months is still too soon? I'm really nervous about this shot!!!!! Thank you in advance! |
My pup had his last week at 11 weeks old and went into anaphylactic shock about half an hour after being injected. His face swelled up, he had difficulty breathing, and he became covered in welts. I had to rush him back into the vet for antihistamine shots. I don't think age makes much of a difference, I would just arrange to observe your pup for a few hours after he gets the vaccination so you can make sure he isn't allergic. I'm really glad I took a half day off work to watch Ollie, otherwise I might not have a dog still... I would get the shot done soon though, in case the dog has to be boarded for some reason. Most places that board will not accept a dog without proof of vaccinations. |
Mine had their first rabies at 4 mos without any problems |

12 weeks is when your puppy should have their first rabies shot, and it should be good for ONE YEAR, then after that, it will be good for THREE years... |

My Dymond had hers last week at 15weeks. It's good for a year then the subsequent shots will be good for 3 years. |

mine didnt have any side effects. they did however get a lump where the shot was givin for a little while but then went away.nothing to worry about |
I looked up the law and dogs don't have to be vaccinated for rabies until they are seven months old in New Jersey. I'd wait as long as possible since Dr. Dodd's doesn't recommend rabies vaccinations before six months old. He'll need a one year booster, then a booster every three years after that. Always make sure that the rabies vaccine is given separately from other vaccines with 2-3 weeks in between. Sadly, Pfizer makes the vaccine and it is identical whether it is given annually or every three years. It's just packaged differently under the names Defensor I and Defensor 3 to satisfy different state's requirements. Pfizer's own testing showed that the vaccine lasted for at least three years. |
