Is my baby too young for the lepto shot? I have a 12 week old female yorkie. She had a lepto shot at 8 weeks. I have to take her to the vet tomorrow to get more "puppy"shots. When I called to make the appointment the gentleman told me that at 8weeks she was too young to get the lepto. Well she got it thankfully with no reacton, but now I'm very concerned about tomorrow. Is she due for another in the series? Having many negative things about the shot I'm hesitant to get it. My other two babies had their shots. No, I don't live on a farm I live in a suburban neighborhood. I have about 1/3 acre and my backyard is fenced. I wasn't even given a choice as to whether or not I wanted the shot. I just thought these shots were part of the routine. |

I do not give the Lepto to mine because I have heard bad things. My vet is fine with it since there is not a problem with Lepto in my area. I would see what your vet says. |
I also refuse to give my yorkies the lepto shot. I've heard too many horror stories. My vet orders the DHPP vaccine without lepto. We live in a farming community, but I keep my dogs clear of all high-risk areas. It's just not worth the risk. |

If you can, try to avoid it. My Darcy had his first at 10 weeks and the second lepto 3 weeks later (it is unavoidable in my country) .After the first he was fine ,no side effects or anything ,after the second he was very sleepy for 12-14 hours and after all bad things I’ve heard about the vaccine I’m worrying all the time for his liver . If you have a choice skip this one. |
You definately have a choice. It is your dog. The only one you don't have a choice on is rabies. Some kennels may refuse to board without lepto though. A lot of thought should go into whether this is a necessary shot for your puppy. It can be quite dangerous to Yorkies and has killed Yorkie puppies. It doesn't protect against all strains and has to be given every 9-12 months. At the same time, the disease is nothing you'd want to deal with either. So, how big of a risk is lepto in your area? Michigan is an area where lepto is thriving right now and my vet would have to give me a very, very good reason for me to consider using this vaccine at all on any dog. I most likely won't use it on a small dog again (Ellie had it once), If I had to give it, I wouldn't do it before 16 weeks. |
I think my Biggie had a terrible reaction to the Lepto shot. We did not know any better and we had him enrolled in the Banfield program his first year. They gave the little one at around 6 months 4 shots at once and one of them was the Lepto. He was ill for a couple weeks. He had terrible diarrhea, would hardly eat and was too miserable to play. We found a wonderful vet and he told us he thought his reaction was due to so many shots given at once and probably the Lepto. He has since had 3 shots given to him at once and he has not had a reaction. Who knows if the lepto was the reason he got so sick...but we are not taking chances..We will never give him the Lepto again. |
