Neutering Hello everyone ... I'm having Paco neutered on Dec. 22nd and my vet also wants to run blood work, I'm just wondering if that necessary? Also if anyone can give me any tips on what to expect when he comes home after the surgery ... such as temperment, how long to keep the cone over his head, how to feed him (do I take the cone off?), etc. Any and all tips are appreciated. My vet also told me that he will be staying over night ... that's going to be very hard for me  |
for many many reasons, yes please get the pre-op bloodwork ... as far as your baby having to stay overnight, unless there will be someone there to watch over him ALL NIGHT, i would personally insist on bringing him home with you...just make sure you get the phone number and address of the emergency vet just in case (but i am sure he will be fine! :) ) my vet did not use a cone...i put them in baby onsies and they worked great! |
My vet always keeps mine overnight too, used not to with the males, but, they do with them now too. I asked one time, they said they had the 3 vets that would take turns staying with the ones that had had surgery. I've never had the blood work done on any of mine, but, have told them if anything arises, then do whatever is necessary. Good luck, your baby will do fine Mine never had a cone over his hear, the females didn't either, nor did mine have any kind of pain meds. They usually are much nicer to have around once they're neutered, they're more loving, don't feel they have to run out the door when it's open(if there is a female within a mile away that is in heat), and they don't go marking everything. |

Thank you so much for the advise and tips!! I will definately find out if someone will be with him over night, I don't like the idea of him being left alone. |

I would do the blood work as it will tell you if the surgery is safe for the most part (there are never any guarantees). Max got neutered two weeks ago and he wore the cone for the first night but then I realized when it was off he didn't ever bother with his stitches so I didn't make him wear it. It depends on your dog. Your vet will give you all the info after surgery. Max kept doing a throw up sound which the vet said was ok for the first 24 hours. They said to offer him small amounts of food/water at a time for the night and if he threw up then to not feed him until the morning. Vanessa |

ps...as far as feeding goes, since he will stay overnight, they will probably offer him food and water, but when you get him the next day, just see how he reacts...i would just give little water, and maybe 5 pieces of kibble at a time, see if he keeps it down, if he does, offer him more maybe 30 min later.... |

Thank you so much for the info. you've given me, I really appreciate it! |
I would do the bloodwork just because it will give you a heads-up if your pup has any liver trouble, like a shunt. |
