underbite/overbite Hello! Reading through so many posts I came across underbites and overbites. Is this common amongst yorkies? Is this something I should worry about? Many breeders dont inculde the teeth issue in their guarantee. |

It's considered a fault and the breeder should definitely inform you of the "off" bite. A reputable breeder would discount puppy's price due to the bite Some overbites correct themselves. An underbite is generally more of a concern than an overbite. Some bites are so bad off the dog requires orthodontia work to eat properly. A dog with an off bite looks like they are smiling all the time. |
I think with both you just have to make sure its not so severe that they cant eat properly. I had a persian once with a severe overbite and she had trouble eating sometimes |

This all makes me nervous! Thanks for the replies though! So, if there is an underbite, the breeder should discount the dog? What is the likelihood of a puppy with an underbite? Is it a genetic disorder? |
I think that the breeder will discount either way, overbite or underbite they are both not of the standard. It isn't something you should be nervous about because, as stated above, it is something that you can look for yourself. HTH |
Well, that is what I am worried about, what happens if I put a deposit (which doesnt seem refudnable) and the puppy has an underbite, then I lose my money or take a puppy with teeth problems? When can they tell that the puppy has an underbite? |

To make sure we are discussing the same thing... A underbite means the bottom teeth comes out further than the top. An overbite means the top teeth come out further than the bottom. Dogs with a bad bite shouldn't be breed. Yes, to discounting puppy because there are lots of available puppies without this fault. All that being said...there are pet yorkies out there with overbites with absolutely no problems. |

You could always present your question to the breeder. Most times...a deposit can be applied towards another puppy. |
2 Attachment(s) Tinkerbell has an underbite....and has no problems eating or any dental problems. Thats why it looks like she is smiling in the pictures. It doesnt show all the time...mostly when she is looking up. |
