My baby is To skinny! I need your help! I have a 1 year old yorkie named Winston. He is TO SKINNY!!! I leave his food out all the time so he can eat when he wants. I am currently feeding him Iams puppy hard food. I thought I should keep him on the puppy food because its high in protein and nutrition for growing puppies. But its not helping! I was wondering if anyone knows of a healthy food for my baby that would put some weight on him. I feel like a terrible mom because he is so skinny and when people pet him you can feel his ribcage. I want to plumpen him up. Can anyone recommend a food for me to give him? Thank you, Gail |

Have you thought about switching to another puppy food? Something higher quality then Iams may help as well, since Iams has a lot of ingredients with little nutritional value. A 'natural' or holistic pet food might help, since those are made of whole food ingredients...Also, it will be more flavorfull, so he might eat a little more. Petco or Petsmart carry a bunch now, like Wellness, Halo and Solid Gold, just to name a few. There are also some high quality foods JUST available at pet shops.. It is better to err on the side of thinner, but since your vet said...Just make sure not to go overboard! |

Truthfully all the "healthy" foods we found, had less flavor not more, but if he's not enjoying the Iams anyway, it may not be a bad idea to switch. There is also lots of information on home cooking, and I know most dogs love that, but you do have to do some reading on it to get the proper balance. |
I like Wellness, but as the previous poster said, the healthier foods aren't as flavorful, but it would be good since he isn't enjoying the Iams anyway! A REALLY good appetite stimulant is Green Tripe. It is the inside of the cow's stomach with partially undigested grass and stuff. You can get it canned - Tripett and it is SUPER healthy. I would mix a little into whatever food you choose. Its stinky though!! I really like Orijen and Nature's Logic for dry foods... |
Have you looked into a pre-made raw formula? I use Nature's Variety raw, and my babies are THRIVING on it. Ranger is of normal size and has never had a problem with eating, but Ryder is tiny and came to me a bit thin and a fairly picky about food. They now dance around "talking" to me when I am preparing their food- they can't get to it fast enough. Something to look into.. |
I am actually also a raw feeder - I started my Ella Bean out on premade Raw - Nature's Variety and Primal and had great results.... |
If his weight is low, it may not just be the food...other conditions can also cause a low weight such as tape worm and low appetite for the food he eats. But I've heard from various pet owners that their dogs have gained weight from eating Taste of the Wild, possibly because of the higher protein content. |
Has the vet ruled out other problems by doing a blood test and test fecal sample? How much does he actually weigh, and how much does he eat? A higher quality food and more of it sounds like an obvious solution, if there are no other hidden health problems. Adding a little diced boiled chicken and some brown rice over the top of the dry dog food will likely get him more interested in the dry. It is often said here that since Yorkies are so small and eat so little, DO spend the extra money on a high quality food for them. Be sure to make food changes gradually so you won't upset his digestive system. Keep posting here so you will get continued support, and good luck! |
