Wheezing?? I have a 5 year old Yorkie, Libby. She has always had a snort. When she has something in her mouth like a toy or treat she makes a snorting noise. During allergy seasons she also has a sneeze and the snorting gets louder and she seems to hate going out side. I was told by her Vet. when she was younger that it was allergies. She will even get a little sick with it when the allergens are high. Lately she seems to be snorting more and wheezing and it sounds like she is having a tough time breathing. She does not act sick in any way. I am concerned that she may have a new problem such as asthma. She does not cough or sneeze with this just wheezing and the open mouth snorting when she has something in her mouth. Thanks for your help. |
Is is possibly just "goose honking"? |
I am not sure what you mean by "goose honking". I thought that was considered coughing. She doesn't cough. It sounds like it may be upper respiratory but I am not positive. |
Yorkies are known for a "reverse sneeze", also called a goose honk. The scientific name escapes me. It sounds like the dog is either growling or dying, but it's usually fine. It can be a sign of tracheal collapse, so you do want to keep an eye on it. If she doesn't seem sick or tired, and only makes this sound when she's excited, she's most likely fine. If it becomes constant, take her to the vet. Make sure the vet knows about the "reverse sneeze." My friend took her dog to four vets before it was disgnosed as harmless. |
I don't think it is a reverse sneeze. I watched a video someone else had posted with that problem. It is nothing like that. It is just a constant sound in her breathing. It is not worse with excitement. It seems to be loudest in the morning and eases up as the day goes on. So this is not the goose honk thing. |
I think my baby may have the same issue as yours. Of course my vet told me not to worry too much about it but let's face it, it's worrying! I am trying to find more out myself. My Jambo will wheeze as if he is having an asthma attack, definitely having trouble getting air in. It also sounds like he has a post nasal drip or the like because it's like when we humans have a stuffed up nose but it is runny so we try to sniff it up. |
More on the wheezing I don't hear anything that sounds like she has mucus in her nose. She makes a "grunting" kind of noise and I can't tell if it is coming from her nose or throat. I pretty much only hear it when she has something in her mouth like a toy or a chewie.:aimeeyork |
my poor wheezing little man Thank you for posting all these symptoms. The one thing that seems to be recurring theme and similar to my little guy is the Bordatella nasal vaccine he received. Ever since then, he's been making the wheezing noise. Talk about a light bulb. Has anyone tried holistic medication? I'd hate to medicate him again. |
