Another thread about allergies and food.
 
So, I made a thread about the possibility of Mahina having allergies to chicken. I had her on Wellness Puppy and the main protein source of that was chicken.

This was the fat and protein in the food:
Crude Protein Not Less Than 28.0%
Crude Fat Not Less Than 17.0%

Well I switched her to Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish (Maybe I should have used duck or venison because I HATE the smell of fish). It's supposed to be an all stages formula.

This is the fat and protein in the food:
Crude Protein 21.0% minimum
Crude Fat 10.0% minimum

She's only 4 months & 2 weeks old. Weighs about 4 1/2 lbs. I'm worried shes not going to get enough protein or fat from this food. I need some opinions on if it's okay to continue this on her or if she needs more fat and protein.

Gahh am I just being a worried mother to my furbaby? I really just want the best for her. & I have the feeling too much salmon gives her diarrhea. I gave her some zukes salmon treats (only 3 pieces) cuz I'm not giving her anything with another protein in it to see if this works.
Anyone else have problems with salmon?

the level of fat is great and so is the level of protein- If you are worried about protein go to a grain free food and the protein will be higher but i think NB is a great food and wouldn't hesistate to feed it.

Hmm, then I'll most likely stick to it... she seems to really like it. And actually eats it when I put it in her bowl, which is a first. I suppose as long as she's gaining weight then she's thriving! I'll keep a watch on her weight.

I personally think 10% is way too low for a puppy.
I'm not sure what the AAFCO guidelines are on this but all life stages foods go through feeding trials. Pups must have done well on it to pass, so theoretically it is fine, however, in my opinion, growing pups need more fat and protein.

Now if I had a choice between that and Purina, I feed that but I think there are better foods for this.

Ellie is on 18% fat (and this is considered low). She needs low fat because of her pancreas issue and her vet wasn't too happy with the thought of taking the fat down further. Ellie's metabolism is fast. She is 7.

Would you have any suggestions on a different high quality food that I could give her?

I think I'm going to do a little more research on some different brands.
But I'll gladly take any suggestions. Maybe something with fish since she seems to gobble this food down. When she was on wellness she would pick here and there. I'd put the food down for her when I woke up around 7 and she wouldn't touch it till 12!

Also, dry skin probably has to do with allergies right? Or could it be the cold weather?

I checked under her tummy where she had dry flaky skin, it's gone down a lot. I parted her hair on her back and there's some dry flaky skin there also. "/ I also see that shes changing colors!!! :D

Flaky skin doesn't say food allergies to me although it could be.
Yes, i could be dry skin or the wrong shampoo.

Have you looked into the California Natural line?

I think what Ellie May is getting at is that she needs to be on a Puppy formula which has higher fat content- I tend to just skim posts before posting and I ddint' see that she was that young.

California Natural is a great brand!

It could be the shampoo... the last time I washed her I used an oatmeal shampoo. In the last thread you mentioned it could actually cause irritations. I was planning on getting Earthbath's hypoallergenic shampoo or Buddy Wash Shampoo. But I won't be bathing her for about 3 weeks...
She never itches where I see her dry skin "/ Just bites her paws/legs and scratches under her chin.

I actually saw California Natural at a local pet store so I know it's available to me so I'll take a look at that.

lol. I tend to do the same thing... and read someone else's reply. I end up confused and have to read the post all over again!
I blame my mom for telling me/showing me how to speed read (or skim over) almost everything. HAHA.

I'm about to look into that food right now, I guess I better find someone who feeds their dogs these foods... I wouldn't want them to go to waste.

OH if i could only tell you the amount of food we have donated to the humane society- they love seeing us show up :)

I never thought of that! I should totally do that. Luckily I got the NB for 6 bucks at petco... I don't feel like I'm wasting too much money.

Hmmm, it wasn't me who said oatmeal shampoo can cause irritation. :)
I'd be careful with things like Buddy Wash.
It contains tea tree oil.
Most people are fine with it but it is toxic if licked (especially to cats) and I don't consider it safe.

Hmm, and I do have cats. Maybe I'll steer clear. One of my cats and Mahina love to play with eachother.

I brought home some california natural (rice and lamb puppy). I thought she liked the Natural Balance... but oh man! She scarfed this stuff down... even picked it out from the bowl (I'm mixing them for now). There were pieces of NB left behind on the floor (where she decided to spit them out) and all the CN was gone! LOL, I guess she knows what she likes.

Here's a link that shows the AAFCO requirements. AAFCO Puppy Food Standards & Requirements The minimum for puppies is 21% protein and 8% fat (dry matter basis). I interpret these guidelines much like the RDA for humans in that these levels are the minimum required to prevent a deficiency rather than the optimum levels to promote health. The food I feed my dogs (puppies and adults) has 36% protein and 18% fat.
