Bordatella? Hi everyone~ I just went to visit a Bed & Breakfast because I may have to board Lexi there for a few days when we go away (sniff, sniff). They said she will need to have the Bordatella vaccine. Is this safe? Any thoughts on this? It will have to be given at least 10 day beforehand, so I'm running out of time. Thanks for any info. you can share! ~Robbye :aimeeyork (Hoping her brother will house- and dog-sit!) |
Most boarding facilities require it, so it will be hard to get around it. If you have to give it, you have to give it... Without it, dogs can get kennel cough which can develop into pneumonia. With it, the same can happen because it doesn't protect against all strains. The nasal drop vaccine (this one is usually given) can cause kennel cough. It is a non-core vaccine and not one I give but maybe someday I'll have to. |

So basically, the vaccine to *prevent* kennel cough can actually cause it? If I have the choice, would it be better to request one over the other? (nasal vs. injection) Thank you. |

I have heard the injection stings, but it is a killed virus. I havn't used it so I am not sure if it hurts or not. The up the nose vaccine is live modified and has given it to two of ours. Once in a pup, but it just got a slight case of the sniffles and one pup that we bought that gave her full blown case. None of our other dogs got it from her though because they were all vaccinated for it. Our dogs do still get it and will do so as we take them out in public a lot. Boarding places and shows require it. |
My dog got kennel cough from the intra nasal vaccine, then passed it to my other dog. They hacked and coughed for weeks. The vet gave a steroid shot and cough medicine, but no antibiotics. Symptoms showed up almost immediately after the vaccine, so I would get it as soon as possible to see if your baby will get it. Good luck. |
There are 2 different ways to administer the bordatella, some vets give shots, some give stuff up their nose. I had to have my yorkie get it one time, but, it was up the nose, so, no biggie |
All of ours get it too as well spend lot's of time visiting with Yorkie friends. My Chow Chow always got the nose application. The Yorkies all get the injection and we haven't had a problem. |
Thank you to everyone for your responses! I am still hoping my brother will watch her. He'll have to let me know soon, or I will run out of time to get the vaccine.:) |

i think this is the 1 vaccine that doesn't really have any side effects to it, besides making them sneeze a little bit! |
