Sick Yorkie Hello, We are the proud parents of a 6 month old yorkie, named Stanley B. For the past 2 weeks he has had a lot of diarreha, and I mean a lot, 7-9 piles at a time. I didnt think that much could come out of his little body. On Monday, we took him in to the vet, they tested his stool and said nothing was abonormal, and also that he was not having any stomach pains. They gave him a medicine called Metrenidasole, and said to give it to him until his stool hardened. We did that, and as soon as we stopped giving him the pills, back to the diarreha I called a second vet for an opion and they said to feed him boiiled hamburger meat and white rice, and continue the pills, that seemed to be working again, until this morning he had muckas diarreha when i let him out. We have no idea what is going on with him, and are worried. He seems very happy and playful, nothing out of the norm. Any help on this would be great. His normanl food is Eukanuba Puppy Lamb and Rice formula, and some hard puppy treats when he goes potty. Thanks,Joe |
Oh poor guy. I always feel so bad for them when they have diarrhea. Ok first- change his food- it could be the food- Eukanuba is Not a good food contrary to what your vet tells you or what they tell you at Petsmart. He needs to be on a higher quality food and it is probably the bi products in the Eukanuba that is causing the diarrhea. Right now I really like Natural Balance dog food- you can go to their website and see where they sell it near you. When you change him over it needs to be SOOOO gradual- because he is having poop problems take about 10 days to switch him- each day adding more of the Natural Balance and less of the Eukanuba. Also- since he was on antibiotics that is probably not helping. Antibiotics as you know kill bad bacteria- but they also kill good bacteria. He needs the good bacteria back in his system- a good easy way to do this is pro biotic yogurt- like Activia. Get plain or vanilla and give him a few teaspoons twice a day- i use fat free yogurt just make sure it is NOT sugar free because then they use artificial sweetners which are toxic to dogs. Also to help him with his diarrhea give him PURE canned pumpkin. This should hlep firm up his poop while he is transition foods. I would TOTALLY stop the boiled beef- it is way to high in fat- i would be doing boiled chicken breast and white rice until his poop is back to being good with the yogurt and pumpkin and then i'd slowly start introducing the new food with the old food. hope that helps and he feels better soon! |
Hi Joe. I use to know a Sharon and Joe Nyitra from Buffalo. He was in the Navy and stationed at Mayport Beach, FL. back in 1971. Would be so wonderful if your the same Joe. :D I have one suggestion here. Buy the book titled PROTECT YOUR PET More Shocking Facts by Ann. N. Martin 1.Dangers of Commercial Pet Foods 2. Raw Meat Diet Controversy 3. Excessive Vaccinations 4. Increased Cancer in Pets 5. Healthy Recipes and Resources It's really a must have book of you want to have healthy pets. ;) |
