New parents to a yorkie hello all, first post and first time owner of a puppy yorkie 8 weeks old. this is the first day we have had him and he is lovely little dog, quiet. I have noticed that he shakes alittle and was alittle sick earlier? is there something wrong with him???? Also we have been given Royal Canin Mini Junior food and would like to just make sure we feed him enough, on the pack it say to feed him 3 times aday and split 50g of food over the 3 feeds is this right? Any help would be great and settle our nerves, many thanks |
He won't stay quiet for long. :D I just got an 8 week old puppy as well and he was very quiet and sedate for about the first six days I got him. Now that he's gotten used to my apartment, my cat, and my schedule, he's come out of his shell a lot. Yours probably will too. If he doesn't continue to get sick, he should be okay. He's probably just stressed about being in a new place. My pup also shook a lot during his first days here and still shakes sometimes when he gets anxious or scared. I wouldn't worry about it unless it seems to be constant. I'm not sure about how much food to give, but splitting the dog's meals up to as many as you can manage is better for their blood sugar and digestion than feeding one large meal. Their little stomachs can only handle small amounts of food when they're this little. :) |
Welcome and congratulations. It may take him a few days to settle in. As long as he is eating frequently and not showing signs of lethargy he is probably just stressed from being taken from his environment. I would take him to my vet if you haven't just tohave him checked out. I do this with all my new babies. Keep us posted. |

Is the 50g, on the package, based on the weight of the pup? I think feeding 3 times per day is reasonable. You can watch how the pup eats, and adjust accordingly. |

Can someone comment on the shaking? This could be due to a low sugar level, and helped by Nuti-Cal or Caro syrup. I've seen recommendations that one of these products be part of the Yorkie "kit" in case of symptoms. I have no idea how much to give if needed. |
From my experience, dogs usually shake when they are extremely excited or stressed. My yorkie used to shake all the time - he was one of those classic nervious little dogs. Your new one may be somewhat stressed himself. I resolved my yorkie's problem with exercise and structured play. I don't know how much you can exercise a puppy, but maybe some vigious play sessions will help, and time for him to soak in his new digs. |
Welcome to YT :wavey:and congrats on your new pup...can't wait to see some pics! I can't offer you any advice on the shaking I'm afraid, he must just be nervous of new surroundings. It might be a good idea, as has been suggested, to have some nutrocal on hand just in case. I've read in threads about little ones suffering from hypoglaecemia (spellling?) if they're not keeping food in their bellies, and I think shaking is one of the signs - don't want to worry u though, I'm sure all is fine!:D Wishing you all the best, I hope u enjoy your new baby! xxx xxx |
Just to be safe, I'd purchase a tube of Nutri-Cal from petsmart or petco about $7-8.99 and keep it on hand. Give him about 3 fingertips of this once in the a.m and once in the evening or after a trip or visitors just to ensure his glucose levels stay normal and he doesn't have an episode of hypoglycemia. Shaking is one of the symptoms of this and I would hate for you to go unknowing.. it usually occurs in these situations Stress i.e Visitors, New Home, Change of Environment When the pup gets Chilled or too cold When he goes without eating for too long After a session of too much play (he should only be allowed to be stimulated for 20-30 minutes and let to rest when he is ready ) From being overtired If caught early enough he just needs Nutri-Cal or Caro Syrup and the symptoms can be reversed. Signs of Hypoglycemia to watch for Lethargic Not wanting to play or not being his normal self being overly hungry Shaking There may be more you might want to google it as this is what I can remember...
