Won't eat his l/d dry or wet anymore. My baby Milo had shunt surgery about 4 years ago and has to be on a liver diet food forever. He has been on Hills Perscription Diet switching back and forth between canned and dry. He has never really liked the food but I've managed to keep him on it - until now. He simply hates it and just pushes it away with his nose. What can I do? Are there any other kinds of Liver Diet out there? I would prefer to cook for him but can't find a recipe for a baby with liver problems. Also, are there any treats that I can give him? And one more question - I just read that there are many supplements that I sould be giving but neither my Vet or the Surgeon said anything about it. I'm so glad I found this site. You can get a recipe from a veterinary nutritionist and cook for him if you want. :) The Hills L/D "dry" contains ethoxyquin, so I really wouldn't want to give it at all. The wet is quite a bit better. You could try Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 kibble but it made my Yorkie extremely itchy. Royal Canin seems to do that to lots of Yorkies. You could also ask the vet if they think Natural Balance Vegetarian or something along those lines would be okay in this case. There are supplements like Denosyl or Vetri DMG, milk thistle, lactulose, omega oils and vitamin E that are great for supporting the liver but I'm not sure if these things are given post surgery. You could ask your vet about them. If they say that you don't need to but that it could be of some benefit, I personally would do it (at least a couple of them depending on your particular dog). |
Most like the Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 or vegetarian diets like Natural Balance. Sometimes pickiness is due to issues going on in the liver. Many times, issues arise after liver shunt surgery..It can be within weeks, months, or even years that this happens. It's best to feed 4-6 SMALL meals per day to lighten the load on the liver. Also, supplements would probably be helpful. Have you had any bloodwork done on your baby recently? It's important to continue to monitor bloodwork every 6 months to see how the liver is doing. Does your baby exhibit any symptoms of liver problems still even if they're not as severe? Is she picky? ever lethargic? drool? headpress? urinary issues like dark urine? smelly urine? UTIs? crystals/stones? |
Milo thanks you Thank you everyone for the good advice. I joined the Liver Shunt and MVD Support Group today and they have alot of good information too. Milo has bloodwork regularly and thankfully is not having any of the familiar symptoms of being sick or having any problems associated with the liver. We definitely know the signs. Urine is clear - no crystals, etc. We go through this periodically with him. He just simply doesn't like the food and I don't want to force it on him anymore so I'm looking for something else to try. Thanks for all the suggestions and I've left a message for his Dr. to discuss the options with him. I'll also ask about the supplements. Chat later. Thanks. Kayla and Milo |
