Science Diet I have been feeding my little Jack Science Diet, b/c that is what the breeder fed him. He seems to do fine with it, and I know quite a few people that have used this food for years and have never had a problem. I have read on here though, from quite a few people that they don't like Science Diet. What should I do or what do you all recommend? Jack is about 14 wks old now, and I hate to switch his food. I'm not sure what to do!!! |
I fed Gus Science Diet for several puppy months. I'd guess that there are better foods, and worse, so I'd say it falls in the middle quality wise. At one year of age I switched Gus to Wellness for small breeds. I think that Merrick and Wellness are good, and there are other good brands too. I don't think it's critical to switch immediately, but continue to research and collect input. When you decide, plan on mixing the Science Diet and the new food together for a couple of weeks of feedings. |

It's not the best food, and it's not the worst. What you have to figure out is if it is what is best for YOUR dog. If you want to try some other foods, switch gradually and see how he does. If you try a new food and it doesn't seem to be the right one for him, you can always switch back. :) |

Thanks Marci for another good tip!!! you always have the best advice! i fed my yorkie Science Diet and it gave him bad skin allergies. so bad so that he had a balding white spot that i noticed directly after him being put on that food. so i took him off and he eats canidae! Science diet is crap food |
Science Diet is always recommended by Vets because they get a kick-back on it. Honestly, it's not the best out there. There are lots of nutritious foods out there to feed your pup. You'll get many recommendations. I use LIfe's Abundance. Just as you would the others, take the time to research all of your options. Your baby can't make the choice, it's in your hands. If you want to do some research on Life's Abundance you can read all you want at: Welcome to Trilogy Free samples are also available. Just let me know and I'll make sure you get some. |
I personally would not feed science diet, it has by products, corn and some have bha and bht. Hills does science diet and they are a big corporation that puts whatever it wants to into their food. |
Please go to this site and look up the food you are feeding, then look at the 5 and 6 star foods. Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost Also it is good to switch your dogs food from time to time. A varied diet is much better than the same thing all the time. Plus how would you like to eat nothing but chicken and rice every day for years?:) |
when london was a puppy i fed her science diet lamb and brown rice puppy food and now she gets natures best lamb and brown rice by science diet. she likes it and shes healthy. |

Dog Food Review Ratings The Dog Food Project - How does your Dog Food Brand compare? Dog's individual needs differ--what may be the highest rated/best match for one dog may not work for the next. People need to research and determine what their individual dogs needs are rather than just blinding picking something that someone gave a high rating to. |
I have fed 3 dogs on Science diet and they have all trived. I tried other brands but poop wise this was the best. They do have an natural food called nature's best which is what I currently use in small bites. I had someone in the know look at the ingredients and they said it was fine. I do give carrots for treats and sometimes a little chicken with the kibble. |
In reply to BamaFan121s reply you will find that all 3 sites basically agree but the dog food review site I listed is really user friendly and my favorite. PS the site is completely independent of any dog food manufacturer and lists the people who do the reviews and what there professions are. They also explain why the ratings were given. It is a great site!!! |

Again, it's a site that has a lot of information about the ingredients--which is what they base their ratings off of and not adequate enough to base one's decision on. A site being "user friendly" is completely irrelevant to what is the best diet for your dog...convenient and easy maybe... The more in depth info, the better IMO. |
Just looked them over again and stand by my claim. I am however just referring to commercial dog food. Dog Food Review Ratings, lists Dog food analysis: Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble As there #1 site with a high rating. look them all over. I am not saying to only look at one site. I just think from doing a ton of online research that Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble is the best one. :) |

But, that's fine...everyone is entitled to their own opinion and to offer the advice as they choose. Generally speaking, being that 'commercial' isn't the only option and certainly not the best option for every dog, it only makes sense to not limit educating yourself to a site that examines kibble only. Again, I personally don't feel comfortable basing my decision of what to feed my dog based off the opinions of a few people who rated something based on ingredients and info they got from the manufacturers themselves alone. I stongly urge anyone who has never read the info on dogfoodproject.com to really take the time to read the info on there. There is sooo much information on there and some really good charts to help you understand and make educated decisions for yourself rather than just taking someone's word for it and picking from a list. |

Thank you all so much for your input! This has really helped me out. I am a new yorkie owner and I want Jack to get the best food possible!! Thanks Again!!!! |
Nutri Source We have our little one on Nutri source. They have a variety of flavors so that we can keep that change going through her diet but also stay with one brand. The quality is there and for us, it is made locally so that was a big draw for us. I think you can buy it online or see where you can buy it around where you live here /Nutrisource Super Premium Pet Foods It isn't sold at typical chain stores so you have to find a store that carries it, but it is worth it! I'm not sure if they send samples but you could contact them and ask. |
