Table Scraps As tempting as it may be to feed that cutie some of your food ..please don't. Our first Yorkie was a dog we fostered from the Vet office where my husband is a tech. The dog had a consistant diet of people food and developed kidney disease which led to kidney failure. He was only 3 yrs old. He needed daily IV fluids and the owner couldn't give the care ( or stop the people food..because he would "beg" for it and she couldn't resist) so we adopted him and saw him through to the end. It was so sad. He got terribly high blood pressure and medication wasn't helping. We had to put him to sleep a couple of days after New Years and even though we only had him a couple of months, he touch our hearts. So the moral of the story is be sure to only feed proper food for your Yorkie so he/she can stay as healthy as possible and give you a lifetime of Yorkie love! We have a new puppy now...a new Yorkie..I fell in love with the breed through the experience with our foster dog. Sorry so long but the message is heart felt. |
Your story is very sad and alarming. I have to confess to giving my yorkies table scraps from time to time. I will quit doing it. |
Wow, what a sad story. I do give my dogs table food . Just little bits, but I do it on a daily basis. I'm going to stop doing that now that I've read your story. Thank-you. |
OMG. I am never feeding Gracie table scraps again! Thanks for the info! |
HOw sad! Amazing what people food will do to them. |
Feeding Table Scraps This is a very sad story.. I went through this with my dad's lab while I was baby sitting him when dad was in the hospital. Dad has feed him everything he eats. I have told him I dont know how many times not to feed Bear table scraps. He has always replied that is what we did when we were kids. What I can't get through his thick skull is that food is different now. We eat processed foods , that contain chemicals for shelf life. And they didn't use a lot of spices back then. It is the sugar, salt. pepper, any spices and Chemical preservatives that our dogs little kidneys can not flush out, like ours. It just keeps building up and damages the kidneys. So I bring Dad home for the week-end to stay with us and what did I see him do - but feed Bear a seasoned potato wedge, I lost it.... I told him I wouldn't take Bear back to the vets when he goes into kidney failure aganin or into a coma. I asked him if he wanted me to go and get a gun, as he might as well shot Bear, he would suffer less. He really got mad at me. I mean why bother putting this poor dog through all this medical treatment and having to stay at the vets for two weeks to pull him through (and he was lucky he did come through it, he was pretty bad) for him to just disregard Bear's life that way and the vets efforts.... |
Wow...those stories are very powerful. We all know how bad people food is for them and the pancreatitus and all. I just wish I could convince my H who sneaks them tidbits all the time. I will print this story out and give it to him. I also buy lots of different healthy dog treats so I treat them a lot, just not with people food. They got frozen paws doggie ice cream tonight and they loved it as much as they would real ice cream. I don't have to feel guilty when I feed it to them. :) |
thank you for that information. |
Good advice that should be heeded. Another risk of table scraps is pancreatitis. It's a shame that more people don't realize that our puppies are not made like us and therefore cannot eat like us. |
Very good information eyedoc - I am sure you story can help many Yorkie owners keep their fur babies safer. :aimeeyork |
