Diarrhea My Nala has had diarrhea for about 3 - 4 weeks straight. At first the vet found that it was Gerardia and it was medicated, but now we've gone through all of the medicine and each time she gets off of the medicine, the diarrhea and loose mucousy stool comes back. She is acting normal but the diarrhea worries me. The vet said to try to give her bottled water instead of tap. Does this sound right to anyone? |
Sometimes multiple treatment of antibotics are required to eliminate guardia. Reggie had chronic diarrhea. I feed him a bland diet of rice and boiled chicken...along with a tablespoon of plain pumpkin per day. Once his poo's firmed up...then I added canned wellness...slowly increasing to replace the rice/chicken...after 3-4 days...I started adding kibble...decreasing the canned until I fed all kibble. He hasn't had an issue since. |
Was a fecal done for giardia and was it positive? What med are you using? What are you feeding? Was there a food change before/during this issue? What is her age? Does her poo have blood in it? Is she also vomiting? |
Diagnosing giardia is so hard because positive tests are hard to get and even when you get one, there is really no way of really knowing if that is causing the diarrhea... We are having diarrhea issues here too but the giardia test was negative. Metronidazole worked fairly well but after stopping, the issue came back. This time on Metro things aren't going well. If it continues after diet change, I guess we will have to do a biopsy. What meds did your vet give? |
Deegan has had diareaha now for about a month too! He has lost about 1.5lbs and nothing seems to be helping... Tests all came out normal and he's been on some meds and changed to food for intestinal issues, but nothings changed and I'm getting really concerned. I'm feeding him twice as much as I used to and he's still very thin. I just updated a post about him a minute ago. I'm taking him back to the vet on Friday if things don't get any better. This will be the 3rd time. I hope they can find something or that it clears up, he can't afford to lose anymore weight. |
My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel had Giardia as a pup - unfortunately all the antibiotics weakened his gastrointestinal tract and then he developed Gastritis, which is now consistently an issue. We use holistic methods, as all conventional medicine did NOTHING to stop the diarrhea - as mentioned above, plain canned pumpkin helps...but I also use the anti-diarrhea system from Vitality Science (my holistic vet reccomended them and these have changed our life!!) Pet Health Care - Natural Remedies For Your Cats & Dogs it includes a very potent probiotic (PetFlora) that helps promote healthy bacteria along the gastrointestinal tract and we use the Canine Comfort daily and the herbal anti inflammatory. This helped beyond belief. I have been struggling with Louis' digestion since I got him as a pup and these methods, along with a raw diet, have worked wonders!! |
