Female has diarrhoea
 
My female has a very loose stool her puppies are 4 weeks tomorrow.Is it because she is still cleaning them ie:eating their poo and wee.What should I do?

It's pretty common for my girls to have loose stools for a while after whelping. They're eating not only for themselves but for their babies so their food intake is very high. I don't think the food sits in them long enough for them to form good stools sometimes. It also depends so much on what you feed them. I have a girl whose pups are 4 1/2 weeks now. Right after their birth she was very picky and so we fed her a lot of canned food along with meat and her whelping pudding. Her poo was very loose. The last week or so, she has been eating more like her regular diet (kibble with some canned) and her stools have firmed up. You can try feeding her some canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to firm her up. Loose stools and vaginal discharges are common though, for new Moms.

Thanks I don't know if we get canned pumpkin here but I will look,can I cook pumpkin from scratch instead.I have been feeding my Jessie puppy food -pedigree and royal canine yorkie.

Yes, you can cook pumpkin from scratch. I find the canned pumpkin here right next to the pie filling in the store. You just don't want the pie filling because of the spices added to it. I think you'll find your girl getting more to normal when the pups begin to eat on their own and she doesn't have to be such a 'food factory'. Tonight I fed mine their first food (they'll be 5 weeks on Wednesday). It was some kibble soaked in water and squished into a mush. They didn't get much down but did lick up the water and some of the kibble. Best of luck with Mom and babies. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :)

Thanks a bunch ,I will try that mine will be five weeks next wednesday they were born on the 15th October.

That's great to hear. It can be a real mess keeping them clean. My girl had it and she was getting daily 'booty baths' to keep her fresh. Can't have the pups crawling around in all that dirty hair. That's just one of the 'non-glamourous' things about breeding. :p

Luckily she went and did it in the bathroom ,it stank to high heaven for days,my hubby was not impressed.The puppies have been using the newspaper I can't believe such small things pee so much,I gave Jessie some soaked puppy food and one puppy had a bit,Poor Shelby fell in the plate and I had to wipe her off.
