My 15 yr old yorkie B.J doing poor
 

Hi everyone

I have been on this site just reading peoples posts and am really impressed with all of you:) I want to find out a little about yorks mine is 15 and He is not doing well I took him to the vet for an ear infection last month, they gave me pain meds because i said i wouldnt leave there office without any because while i had him at home before i knew he had an ear infection he was crying and crying and they did give him a shot and then also sent him home with antibiotics and pain meds He took a good week and 1/2 before he truly stopped crying, well now he is doing again his ears are ok but she did say he seemed to have a host of problems and we were about to put him down when i took him in for his ear. But then i thought what if that is all his crying was? Well now he still crys and he stands and stares at nothing he cant see well and he paces back and forth all day i put him on his bed and say now lay down and he does for a few minutes then gets up and crys and walks around the house he lost his bowls he barks to go pee yet when he comes in he does his other business in here he is probably ready to be put down yet i dont want to do it if his ear infection isnt gone? he had antibiotics and he doesn't cry while itching his ears like he did when he had the infection i am scared, like i said the vet seemed as though i shouldnt even fix his ear ache for he has more problems then just that? i am confused by her i didnt like her My husband thinks i am being selfish by saying he needs to be put down yet i know he has pain in his stomach cuz he lays down for a few seconds then moves and he'll do this till i prop his tummy and him just right and he'll fall asleep I cant afford the vet its 40 dollars just to walk in the door then more money after they see him? i am just stressed over him any one can help i would love it.

Oh, have you tried looking for a vet that doesn't charge to walk in? What about BanField (PetSmart)? I know they have free appointments here.

Sorry to hear about your pup. Is your baby eating and keeping it down? What are the other health issues at hand?
I just lost lost my ALMOST 15 yr old to kidney failure, (primary reason) but about 3 weeks before we had to put her to rest she was on an antibiotic (b/c she had a dental). Her stomach was very upset by (she was taking them orally) them that we inject the rest.
She would do the same thing that you mentioned about laying down and pacing, she would get lost in the corner and not figure out how to turn herself around to get out...She had poor sight and no hearing too. She got to a point where she wasn't eating either and that eventually was the start to the end for us.
I hope things turn out for the best. 15 yrs is a long time, i was lucky to have that with Julz.

If you dog is pacing etc. he is probably in pain. Dogs hide pain very well and if he's crying and doesn't seem to get comfortable there's something very wrong. You say he has "other problems" but don't say what they are. An ear infection isn't life threatening but if that's been treated something else is wrong or he has pain like the other poster said from the antibiotic treatment. I would certainly not let my dog suffer in that much pain no matter how much a vet visit costs.

He is obviously in terrible pain. You need to either find out what is causing his pain and treat him or have him euthanized. It is inhumane to let him suffer.

What other problems does your vet think he has?

When was the last time he had a full geriatric profile? That includes complete bloodwork, urinalysis,and a thyroid panel. Depending in the results, further testing may be necessary.

Seniors (dogs over seven) need this done annually as many health issues can begin as they age. Troubleshooting little issues before they become serious health problems is the way to make sure they live a long happy life.

ya thanks about the advice about banfield that is were i take him here in portland oregon they charge me $39.00 just to walk in and the last time like i said she seemed to be saying not just his ears but he has other bad bad problems and i said should we consider (excuse spelling) to put him down and she said that was up to me but i felt helpless i didnt want to put him down for and ear infection yet it is clear and he is still crying and crying.

i havent those things coast a host of money and she said to find out more i would need about 8-$900.00 she did say by feeling his belly that he had either spleen trouble or liver one side of his belly looks larger, also i noticed that i thought i would quit feeding him some of our food like when he was sick the only way to get meds down him was to feed him what we had and i wonder if his wineing i from me not feeding him that he has dog food in his dish fresh daily he wont touch it he alslo lost LBS last vet 3 months ago he weighed 13 LBS and when we took him 1 month ago it was 8 lbs so he isnt eating very well yet at times i see his dish being fooled with so he must eat some she said he has more problem stomcah wise and he is so old now.she almost looked at me as if i was being cruel by not letting him go the day i brought him in for his ears?

Your right i am going to take him in again to make sure it isnt his ears and then go from there. thanks all
