Should I be worried... jugular blood draw I'm just a little worried. Zoe had a blood draw yesterday and they took her out to the room to do it which I didn't think anything of. Anyways, when they came back in they told me they had taken it from her jugular. Well today I notice that her skin is pink all the way down her neck to the front of her shoulder. Is this typical or should I be worried? Is anyone familiar with this? She does not seem to be in any pain and is her usual happy go lucky self.... |
Oh, Theresa, I am so sorry to read this :( The poor baby :( I can't believe they draw blood there---seems SO inhumane!! Mine draws it from the leg (I think), and I am no help on this issue, but I hope someone else can be of more help :( Poor baby :( Give her little tiny puppy kisses from Reicher & Kobi, please :aimeeyork:animal36 |
poor thing. I know many vets draw from there and she is probably just bruised. |
My Alex just got blood drawn from there yesterday. He is fine, just a little sore in that area. But you would never know it by the way he plays. That seems to be a very common practice with my vet. I have never had any bad results in 25+ years. |

Last time the vet drew blood from my little Zoe they took her into the back and drew it from her jugular also. I think it is because with the yorkies the veins in their little legs are so tiny so it is much quicker and easier to draw blood from the jugular. The pinkness is probably just a little bruising/irritaion it should go away within a day or two, but extra cuddling and treats never hurt..lol:p |
Many vets draw blood from the jugular on small dogs like yorkies because they can get more blood out of there. Sometimes they can't get enough blood from the leg, especially if they wiggle around... |
yes this is very common and best place to get it because if they pull too much from legs then they can get scar tissue which will make it more difficult if they need to do iv's for something real serious. Also they get more blood this way. Next time just say they bruised your girl last time and you want their best tech to draw her blood or the vet. You can also ask them to do it in the room with you if you prefer |
Thanks everyone! It looks like it must hurt but she really doesn't seem to be in any pain but I think that I'll just let them know next time to be extra careful with her. Thanks for all the advice! |
I had titers done on the girls...my vet told me that the jugular is usually where they take the blood from..I guess they can get more from it. |
blood draw My Vet told me one reason he would take my little one out of the room (and this was just for shots)...is because he did not want my baby to associate the procedure (in case they became upset or felt anything) with me being in the room. Pychological I guess. Maybe this is the reason your vet did what he did. The Vet I used has since retired but was very compassionate. I really miss him and the caring attitude he had towards all animals. Wish there were more like him these days. |
a pet can get more nervous or antsy if the owners there looking at them but we usually dont take them to another room easiest way to get blood from a small dog is neck it may bruise but nothing to worry about!! it can be scary though |
I have had my dogs get several jugular draws and no problems but i would be concerned about the pinkness. watch it very close and even feel to see if it is warm. if it isn't normal color in a day or so, call the vet and tell him you are concerned it might be infected. |
That is very common. If the dog jerks or the needle goes in not quite perfect, they will get bruised. It should go away in a few days. Is it really all the way to the shoulder though? When Ellie gets bruised it is probably just over an inch or an inch and a half up and down. |
Your pup prob. just has a bruise. I used to be a tech and always preferred to take blood from the jugular. The vein is much bigger and the blood pressure is better. You get the blood faster and it is not as painful as a leg (due to all the nerves on the legs). The next time you go in for blood work I would mention that your pup was bruised, maybe they have a better tech or you could ask that the vet take the blood. |
