Raw Diet Only??? Does anyone feed only raw, and if so, how long before the positive effects are evident? I've been told that their skin, hair, and teeth tarter improves on raw. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. |
I feed only raw and really like it for my guys. The change was probably more evident for me in my Wylie - who was older and in his life had first eaten kibble, then I homecooked, then moved to raw. His fur definitely changed, he became less itchy, but it was his TEETH that really changed. His teeth were at their worst when I was cooking for the boys. I don't know how *long* after I switched to raw that his teeth changed, but I eventually noticed that they just cleared up. He is 4.5 yrs old and has never had a dental, and I don't brush his teeth - and they're really quite gorgeous. :D My Marcel was ~10mths old when he started raw and he also had health issues as a puppy, so I can't track his changes as clearly. But he does SO well on raw, his teeth are almost spotless. As far as the question "how long before you see changes" - every dog is different, and for some you may see changes within a month, for others who really need health improvement, it could be longer. You will see almost immediate changes such as much smaller poos, non-smelly poos that almost disintegrate, great doggy breath etcetera. Hope that helps. :) |
I agree with Wylie's mom! My 11 year old collies teeth were awful and in a month or two, they looked alot better but even now after 6 months her teeth are not sparkling white but they may never be after 11 years of kibble. My yorkie's teeth were pretty good to begin with since she was so young when we started and they are almost perfectly white, even the vet remarked. Are your babies teeth really bad and don't seem to be improving? Or are you just wondering? If they don't seem to be improving, are you feeding a fair about of bone? Just trying to help more and wondering.... |
Raw diet Thanks for all the info......my oldest is 8 and is teeth are the worst....they have been cleaned before. I have also been using Suzie's Tartar in their water for the past month and I'm able to see some difference. My other two or 2 and 1. They are all in good health....they had just started itching a lot and Gus was getting some hot spots. So, that is when I changed to grain less. I also read that they could be allergic to chicken, so I changed their grain less to Innova. Now after reading more and talking to the people at the Pet Supply store, I'm feeding all raw. I feed venison with salmon oil in the morning and Missing Link on it at night. Gus' skin has really healed since I quit giving him chicken and my oldest doesn't lick his feet as much. As far as bones to chew on, I give them bully sticks and I get raw bones from the Pet Supply. I only let them have them once a week...on bath day.....it makes their beards so ucky....Again thanks for all the info and keep it coming....nothing is too good for my furbabies!!! |
Raw diet info please I have been reading about the benefits of raw feeding. I wonder what everyone uses, do you just make your own mixture, or is there a certain company that makes the raw diet. I read somewhere recently about Honest Kitchen brand, does anyone use that? I have Teddee, my Yorkie baby, who is 10 months old, but also have two Laso Apsos who are 10 years old and who might benefit from this raw diet I am reading about. |
We've been feeding Ella Nature's Variety Raw Frozen for a few weeks now, and she loves it. Her poo is small, hard, and not so stinky, and she goes less frequently than she did before. She was never a fan of her kibble, so it's great to have a food that she gobbles up right away. I've also noticed that her breath doesn't smell--which is good because she likes to climb up right by my face at night! The Nature's Variety comes in small medallions that are frozen. We just take a few out and let them thaw in the fridge. |
My Rockerito is been on this raw diet about one month now. His health has improved the best. He used to be very fragile and prone to hypo episodes ( he had 4 in total). Since he is eating raw he has never had one more hypo episode again. His hair is very shiny and he always gets compliments about it, perfectly normal skin and white teeth. The only thing I´m not feeling crazy about is his breath. He used to have the greatest breath (like honey I swear) but now it smells so bad!! I´m not sure if it is because of the diet. Cleaning his teeth is very difficult so I don´t know waht can I do to healp him get rid of this bad smell. The meat that I feed him is nature variety beef. they also have chicken and veal. |

I wanted to just say that I feed a Prey Model Raw diet also known as PMR. It's simply just a variety of meat. The same meat you would eat yourself, I just give to my dogs uncooked, bones and all. The chewing of the bones is amazing for cleaning off their teeth! And its more economical than a premade raw diet for me as I have a yorkie and a collie. |
how can you change from homecooking to raw.? i read that you should not mix homecooked food with the raw, as it might give them upset stomachs. do you feed kibble with the raw? if so what brand ? so, if sammy is 7 lbs , i should just give 3 medallions for the entire day and thats it? do i use the salmon oil too? vitamins? please advise as i would love to start him on it asap |
I divide the recommended amounts into two feedings. The pet store owner told me to give them kibble too, but they don't like kibble, so I give them their little healthy dog biscuits in between meals for their teeth. |

I do not mix in veggies. Most PMR feeders don't believe the dog gets any benefit from them as they are not able to digest them properly. I do not grind at all. I just feed the whole piece. In my yorkies case, it might be a chicken leg or just some boneless meat. Sometimes I let her work on pork bones but never beef bones as they tend to be too dense for her. My collie eats a whole leg and thigh. She handles those bones with no problems and also does pretty good with some pork bones. I don't feed her any beef bones either. I try to give them a variety of meat but of course, chicken being so economical, that is a frequent meal. I generally keep 2 days worth of food in a freezer bag and pull them out the day before to thaw. If I were at the market, I would be fine feeding them a piece of say, chicken with out freezing it but if it's wild food (I don't hunt but I get venison donated to me frequently) I make sure to freeze that for a month or so to be on the safe side. how to you keep your Yorkie's beard from stinking, mine get so awful, and I wash his face and beard, but it stil is ucky. I feed all prey model raw, and was just wondering if any one else has this problem, as my Willie loves his RMB. I just don't like the smell of his beard. Thanks and keep lovin them furrbabies. |
I don't know for sure, but since the food is raw, there is a certain amount of decomposition occuring if any is left on their mouth or beard. I feed a crunchy biscuit or chew log after they eat their meal to clean their teeth. I also keep Teddee's beard trimmed so it doesnt get into his food so much. Maybe you can wipe his beard with a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar so it will kill bacteria but not be toxic like soap? Its worth a try! |

Yes, I have two laso apsos and a Yorkie and it cost me about 21 dollars a week to feed the raw patties. I was considering just buying meat myself and feeding that way, but was unsure how to prepare it.. Do you grind it? I find that my Yorkie tends to like to gulp and not chew if I give him a piece of meat whole. So would you grind the meat and bones in a food processor? Patti |
