Vaccination Question- Need Advice Please I have a vaccination question - Keoki is 1 year and 5 months and I am paranoid about over vaccinating. He is due for some shots and they keep sending me reminders- could someone tell me what he needs and does not need- I asked this once before but now that the time has come i would love some help. I plan on switching him to a holistic vet but until then please help. It says he needs Heartworm test ( occult) , Bordetella Booster , Annual Health Exam, Fecal Exam ( Flotation) , and DAPPV Booster ( what is that????) I'm not so crazy about this vet because he seems money hungry to me so thank you for your advice- I really appreciate it :) |
After my dogs have their initial vaccines, I only vaccinate every 3 years. You can do titers also. Some vets insist on yearly vaccines though. I definately wouldn't do lepto. The d is distemper H hepatitis p parvo |
Why don't you switch to your new hollistic vet, and talk over your concerns with him/her? I only do rabies as needed, and vaccines every three-four years. I wouldn't do the kennel cough vaccine unless I was boarding. I also wouldn't do the fecal exam (although it's totally non-invasive) unless I was concerned about something. The heartworm test may be required to renew your heartworm prescription. |
Doing Yearly Vaccines is a great benefit to the vets cash flow I found a link before online that showed that 35% of the vets income was from these yearly vaccines thats why some vets simply won't stop sending those cards out yearly BUT if you tell them you are very well aware of the risks of this over vacination and you don't want any part of that they will not push those shots off on you because you are educated to this problem and won't allow it to be done to your dogs! For your pet it is not a good thing it does weaken their immunity. You don't see us going every year for vaccinations ourselves. I recommend your pup gets the puppy series with the last shot given at 16- 17 weeks then their booster at one year of age then in three years do titers. Don't do Lepto and don't do Rabies at the same visit with any other vaccination. |
I also agree don't do bordetella unless you are boarding your dog or going to shows. Because it only covers 2 out of 8 of the different strains and the bordetella vaccination can cause kennel cough which would require the exact same treatment as the kennel cough would if your dog would happen to ever get it. |
Everything Vaccines Here is a link with a lot of info. I myself had a show Yorkie named Pazazz, he showed in his first show and took first in his class at only 6 months of age, he then was diagnosed with Cancer at the vaccine site and had to be retired from showing as soon as his career began. He is with a loving pet home now. So Vaccines can and do cause harm to our dogs |
Thank you so much!!! I am going to go to the holistic vet and hold off on the vaccinations then- I know he got all of his puppy shots so I think I will hold off until I speak to the other vet- I really appreciate everyones advice and I am grateful I trust my gut. My baby means everything to me and I would never want to over vaccinate. |
The only thing I do is rabis, and I'm going to start doing the 3 year ones. Also, they need tested once a year for heartworm, which to me is stupid if you have them on heartworm preventitive all year:confused: |
I have had mine on heartworm for years and never had anything but the initial test |
Wow. That is scary. Does anyone use Banfield the hospital inside of Petsmart. Are they (in general) pretty honest about what your dog needs? |

I just watched that link posted and wow I had no idea about any of that! I am definitely not getting Stormy's shots in April. From her records she had her first year ones I believe so I am now to scared to do them again. I do need to get her the rabies shot this week and I think I will just do the titer test, I may have to find a vet that will agree with this decision. I am definitely doing more research now! |
I am so grateful for all this information and watched that video also- I am going to see this holistic vet and take the drive to Conneticut after all of your information- especially with our small yorkies I think we need to be careful- it just makes me sick that my vet only cares about the money- I always got that sense about him so will keep him as an emergency vet only. |

Ok, Heartworm test...yes yes yes!!!! even if you have your dog on montly heartworm prevention, things can still happen---mosquitos are the main carriers, and they can still come inside and get your doggie, so do that...... bordetella---i would only get this vaccine if you board your dog or get your dog groomed, or go to a puppy park all the time- if you dont do any of those its really non important--- my dachshund has not had a bordetella for about 4 years and she has been fine- however, if you do board your dog, you need to get it done about 2 weeks prior to boarding since it takes about 24 hrs to get into their system.... DAPPV Booster-- this is for distempter ( man, i cant think of what the others stand for) but this is a yes vaccine too, beacuse it will help your dog from getting sick I would really only do a fecal once a year, unless you notice anything odd with your dogs stool. Fiona's vet visit when she was 3.5 months old, i did not bring a stool sample in, since i have never seen anything abnormal... Good luck, I hope this helps you! |
