Questions for anyone that has had an older dog spayed... My 8 yr old yorkie is getting spayed on the 14th. I don't know if there is anything special I need to do for her??? I have never had a female get fixed.... any help would be appreciated!!! |
I had my first two Yorkies spayed at 10 years of age. I never did while they were young because I was terrified of loosing them. They came through it with flying colors! Just make sure you have a vet that is knowledgable about toy dogs and do a blood panel first. |
I haven't had an older dog spayed---however, some things to consider: 1) make sure that you have pre-op bloodwork done, to make sure that your dog is in good health 2) Ask what kind of anesthesia your vet uses. I believe that IsoFluorine is the best kind for small dogs 3) have your Vet (not the techs) administer the anesthesia and ask for the techs and your vet to constantly monitor it. Make sure that your vet will do this. 4) make sure that your dog has iv fluids constantly... this will help keep her from being dehydrated 5) keep blood sugars monitored. My little one is/gets hypoglycemic...so they were constantly monitoring her sugar levels. Just some ideas.... I know it is very scary! |
You all are the BEST! Thanks for the ideas! I worry about my Zoey... I rescued her, so I don't want anything to happen to her!!!!! |
Ellie was spayed at age 6. There is nothing that needs to be done for an older dog that isn't done for a younger dog except that preop blood work and even a urinalysis becomes all the more important. |
