Just Wondering....

When a dog is in heat, do they have the same symptoms as us?

Fiona has been really sleepy lately, and just laying on her side.....

should I be doing anything extra for her!?

BamaFan121s 11-06-2008 08:07 AM

Sometimes they display similar symptoms...

Dara311 11-06-2008 08:53 AM

I just feel so bad for her, and it really stinks not knowing how she is feeling....

CupofDog 11-06-2008 09:44 AM

Well, if its similar to us, she is probably feeling pretty lousy! LOL :D

Perhaps some trashy magazines and a heating pad will cheer her up? ;)

Poor girl. Hope she is out of heat soon.

You and I both! I am just so upset that the Vet told me to hold her off, until she was a bit bigger and older, and 4 days before her scheduled spay she goes into heat! :( We are doing fine though, I just hope she gets better FAST!!!!!

CupofDog 11-06-2008 09:57 AM

How long does the vet want to delay surgery now that she has gone into heat?

HI Dara311,
I was thinking of you earlier today and wondering how your little one was doing. Daisy was this same way especially about the first 10 days. All she wanted to do was sleep and lay in her bed which is way out of character for her b/c she is usually extremely hyper. She went from being like that to now being a little fiesty. She is getting back to her normal self. Her 3 weeks will end on this Saturday and I am definitely ready for it to be over with. Hang in there!! I was worried about her at first too.

ok, good! yeah, she is either on the floor on her side, or in her bed (which is very abnormal for her, and she was sleeping with me this morning, which she does for about 2 min and then she moves) so there is nothing i can give to her!? still think she will be ok for her spay on the 25th?

I think she will still be ok for her spay. I am actually taking Daisy for her pre-op blood work early next week, so I will let you know what my vet says too. She will just then be coming out of heat and her spay is now scheduled for Nov. 20. Daisy didn't start acting herself until a couple of days ago and she is almost done with her 3 weeks. What day did she come in? I can't remember. I would give her atleast 10-14 days from the time she came in to start acting herself again.

Ok, good to know. My vet said they wont do pre-op bloodwork on her, which makes me nervous too. I"m going to ask them to do it anyways- but she came into heat last saturday the first of Nov. She is acting fine, but then she gets tuckered out! She is doing really well with the diaper too, which is a great thing! I gave her a bath last night because her poor little "tooty" was just so inflammed, and i just wanted her to feel better.

I know CupofDog was probably teasing about "trashy magazines and a heating pad"......BUT I think the heating pad might be an idea!! When we are having cramps, sometimes a heating pad does soothe them. And, they make heating pads for dogs, so it couldn't hurt to try! I bet if you layed it on the floor or in her bed, she'd NEVER move from that spot!! :p Just a thought.....

Other than that, I can't think of anything that helps make humans more comfortable other than Motrin and Midol, which obviously would NOT be ok for her! EXCEPT, a little massage goes a long way when Mother Nature comes calling. Maybe she'd like it if you rubbed her belly or her back or her legs a little, sort of "massaging" rather than scratching or petting, though I bet she'd like that too??

(Bella just got spayed last Friday, so they shaved a little of her belly hair and about a 2 inch strip all the way around BOTH legs [for her IV, which they only used one leg for!!] just above her foot--needless to say, since I am working on leaving her hair long, she looks like a Clydesdale right now! :( ANYWAY, she bites/licks a those areas, but she stops and just lays there when I scratch them for her! All that hair growing back in must be itchy!!)

Oh my goodness! Why would they not do pre-op bloodwork??? I think this absolutely should be done (unless there's a reason I don't know about?)!! You have to do those labs so you know if it will be safe for her to have anesthesia!

no3yshhc0la 11-06-2008 01:31 PM

I encountered the same problem. A few days before her scheduled surgery, Sasha went into heat. If your little one is normally wild and crazy and now she seems wiped out all the time, that's completely normal. When females go into heat, that is one of the symptoms that they can experience. It didn't really take much effect on mine. She just got swollen more than anything, but didn't really change her activeness at all. Hang in there! She'll do just fine!

I know! When i was a vet tech would would do bloodwork for any type of animal, any size, or shape. they told me they wouldnt do bloodwork since she is a healthy puppy--but i'm gonna ask them to do it

bellasmomok 11-06-2008 05:17 PM

^^^:thumbup: Good!! (I had forgotten you used to be a vet tech!)

I have to admit, before Bella got spayed and before I knew more about it, I wasn't really convinced that pre-op blood work was really all that necessary....I planned to do it anyway since I was so nervous about how she would handle the aneshesia, and I DEFINITELY didn't want to lose my baby over not doing a simple test. Now, however, I'm a BIIIIG proponent of it.....She also is a very healthy little puppy, no symptoms of any kind at all. Other than her tearing (which is probably more allergies than anything else), she's perfect! HOWEVER, her pre-op blood work came back with an elevated ALT (302!!) :( I'm having her re-tested in 2 weeks, this time with a complete blood chemistry profile, CBC, AND a bile acid test. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing at all, but I'm worried it won't.....

I would suggest you have a bile acid test done on your baby too, before her surgery, especially since liver shunts, etc... are so prevalent in Yorkies. I asked to have Bella's done (after a YT member, maybe Ellie May??, said that all Yorkies ought to be tested for this before surgery) at the same time they were doing the pre-op blood work, but you can't do that test on the same day as the surgery, so I didn't do it. (They take a fasting blood sample--water is ok, and then they take another sample 2 hrs after eating a fatty meal....the after meal draw is why they can't do it on the same day as surgery.) I wish I had known what I know now.....that if you have a bile acid test done before (if it's positive, I think you'd have to have another test done too before to be sure it's really a shunt), you can just have the liver shunt corrected at the same time as the spay....so only under anesthesia once!

I would have to agree...the 25th sounds like it would be too soon after her heat. :( To the best of my knowledge, the general rule is to wait a few months afterwards--a spay so close to her heat cycle puts her at risk to hemoraging suring the procedure.
Also, the vet should do pre-op bloodwork and anesthesia testing.
On a side note, if you little one has any retained baby teeth, it would be a good idea to have them removed as well when she goes in for her spay.

Hugs to your little one...hope she is feeling better soon.

thanks. yeah, she just has one retained baby tooth that they are charging me 10.00 for, its her upper k9 tooth- i may just have them wait until the 2nd week of dec. i should make the vet pay for this since he was the one that told me to hold her off, so.......

My vet told me the opposite. He said it is better to get them done relatively soon after they come out of heat while they are still young??? Now, I am confused! Daisy came into heat on October 18 and we have hear spay scheduled for Nov. 20. I am taking her Tuesday next week for her pre-op blood work, so maybe I can talk the vet then.

CupofDog 11-07-2008 08:04 AM

If I were you, I would be calling a bunch of vets and asking...This isn't something you want to mess around with!

The heat cycle last about 3 weeks. If she came into heat on the 18th, then your vet has her scheduled for surgery less than 2 weeks after her estrus period ended. It IS better to have it done when they are young to prevent accidental litters, but I'm really not so sure about that quickly after the heat cycle...

I have always been told to spay/neuter your dogs/cats at 6 months old. I was pretty shocked when the vet told me that Fiona would be fine to get done after she was 7 months old.

I'll call my favorite vet I worked with this weekend, and find out what is best for our babies!

Thanks!! I did call 2 different vets in my area today and they said they did not see a problem with me keeping Daisy's spay as scheduled. They both said she should be perfectly fine to spay on Nov. 20. They also told me they would check her very well next week when I take her in for her pre-op blood work to be on the safe side too.
