New Food and Loose Stools Hi all. Seleena was on Royal Canin since she stated eating kibble (she's almost 10 months), and after doing some research, I decided to put her on a premium dog food. After many, many different samples of different foods, I decided on Natural Balance Ultra Premium Formula (dry food). I started to do the gradual switch, and she kept eating the Natural Balace and leaving the Royal Canin. After a few days, I just stopped giving her the Royal Canin and gave her Natural Balance. I noticed after a few days that she was having loose stools. This was two weeks ago. I started giving her a little yogurt (one teaspoon in the morning, one in the afternoon), and that has really helped firm up the stools. When I've not given her yogurt, she gets loose stools again. Should she still have loose stools after two weeks? Could the Ultra Premium food be too much (as in too much "good stuff" compared to Royal Canin) for her? She's not dehydrated or having diarrhea, so I haven't taken her to the vet (plus, her vet practically shoves Royal Canin down your throat when you are there, so I know he wont be happy with the food change). Any advice is appreciated. :D |
Has her stool been checked for parasite. I doubt a food change would affect her stools this long unless there is something in the ingredients that doesnt agree with her |

Seleena also has outdoor allergies, so I'm thinking maybe there's something in the food that doesn't agree with her. I just don't want to do another food switch and have the same thing happen. |
Well maybe you could just switch to another formula of Natural balance. I know they make a fish and sweet potatoe one that is supposed to be good for dogs with food allergies |
whenever you change food on a dog you need to do it over a 3 day grace period. some dogs stomachs cannot handle a new food. you should add a few of the new kibble to the old kibble, and eventually ween her off her old food and give her the new food..... try that...she probably just has an upset tummy from being given new food! |

This is what my girls are on. Thankfully they seem to have an iron gut. |
After two weeks, it sounds as though something is not agreeing with her. I would probably swap formulas to one of the limited ingredient formulas such as Sweet Potato and Fish or Potato and Duck. My boys get raw but I do use kibble (Sweet Potato and Fish) and they LOVE it. For kibble I mean. |
I've tried all of the holistic foods, the last being Natural Balance. They all gave one of my yorkies very loose stools. The vet said it could be too rich for her system. I have them on Purina Pro Plan and so far so good! |
