Weight Question Hi guys, I have a question and a slight concern and was hpoing you could help me. Two weeks ago I brought home Maisie, a 16 week old Yorkie bitch pup. I already have a Chihuahua bitch, Ellie, and I am now concerned that Maisie will grow too large for Ellie. When I got Maisie she weighed about 3lb, and her breeder ( a very reputable, experienced, respected breeder) told me she would make about 4lb. On further discussion she told me probably 5lb actually. Now, 2 weeks later Maisie weighs 4lb and all the charts I've found on line state she will be about 6lb as an adult. I know I should probably trust the breeder as I know she kows what she's talking about but I'm just not sure. If she's put on 1lb in 2 weeks, will she continue to grow to be too big? D'you guys think she'll make this size? I am really worried she may end up being too large to have with Ellie. Please help by giving me your opinions, you guys are all so knowledgable and experienced I would really value your thoughts. Jess :heart to |
I don't have much experience or know yorkies to well but to just put my opinion in I would have to say is that she is still pretty young, and I believe dogs grow til a year old so I definitely see her putting on a little bit more weight. 6 lbs sounds more right to me if she is already 4 lbs. Goodluck hopefully someone may have more insight. |
Weight is not limited to simply the parents' size...there can be throwbacks. Doubling her weight at 12 weeks would give you a close guess. There is usually a growth spurt between 6 - 8 months. As far as being too big for your chi....at one time the three of mine varied in weight 12 pounds, 9 pounds, and 3 pounds. There was never a problem with the "little" guy. |
Ranger's between 5.5lbs and 6lbs, and Ryder is just under 3lbs. They play ROUGH and there has never been any problems. |
Abby weighs 5 lbs and Daisy weighs 10 lbs and they play together all the time. Actually the little one bosses the bigger one around :D |
I wouldn't worry about the weight being too much for your Chi to handle. I have 3 Yorkies, Jeter is my oldest at 13 months of age, he is also my smallest at 2 pounds 8 ounces. Axl is 5 pounds at 5 months old and Yumi Yasha is 3 pounds 7 ounces at 5 months old. They all play great together;) and Jeter holds his own ground with them:) ( he thinks he is a Irish Wolf Hound at times) |
I have dogs of all sizes here. Max weighs in about 4# and Precious (JR) is about 11# and the Greyhounds range from 45-75. Believe me....they all play well. It is amazing how the GH lay and just use their mouths and paws... |
Hey Jess! don't be too concerned..if Maisie does end up 6lbs or more it shouldn't be a problem..2lbs weight difference isn't that much and others on here have yorkies of all different sizes living together with not too much problems.;) (remember I have a Staffy!:eek:) My last Yorkie was about 6lbs and she was very small..she didn't look THAT much smaller than Pixie really..she was just bigger boned and kind of 'chunkier'! The breeder told me Pixie would be no more than 4-4.5lbs but Pixie only just made 3lbs..it is a 'Guesstimate' and sometimes they do end up weighing more or less than originally thought..she may just slow weight gain from now on.:) |
I asked a Breeder one time how much a pup was going to weigh. He then asked me if my mother knew at birth how much I was going to weigh. He told me he could give me a round about weight but it was up to mother nature to decide. I dont think a pound or two is going to make much of a differance. |
Most dogs love to play with other dogs. My Shih Tzu is eleven pounds and my Yorkie is six pounds. They enjoy playing with each other. Dogs know how to communicate with other dogs when another dog starts to play too rough. My Shih Tzu is older than my Yorkie. When she gets tired, she faces the wall and ignores him. My Yorkie then leaves her alone and plays by himself. My dog was about the same size has your dog when I adopted him. My Yorkie's family usually stops growing around five to six months. Maybe your dog will develop just like my dog. Well, anyway it is nothing to worry about. |
There are people that have labs that polay with the yorkies. they know how rough to polay and when the other yelps they know they got too rough. My adult dogs play with the puppies. |
The "charts" have never been correct for my pups. My babys are born fat and healthy and stay fat LOL Then they grow to be 3-4 lbs and thats it. If I went by the charts...all my pups I sold (now 2 1/2 to 4lbs) would have charted to be 5-7 lbs. So the charts are not correct for all lines...just a "guide" It all has to do with the dogs lines. My boy throw small dogs. The charts are always off on my litters. |
Jess...I wouldn't worry about Maise's size being too big for Ellie.... I have dogs of all sizes....Dakota is 80 lbs...Izzy is 45 lbs...My daughter's yorkie is 8 lbs...and Daizy is 5.6 lbs..Daizy adores ALL our dogs...and plays with Dakota all the time...Now that's a huge weight difference!! lol And she's never gotten hurt....like others have said...sometimes the itty bitty ones are the ones that rule over the Bigger pooches!! lol |
