Human Food I swore I wouldn't do it before we got him....but he now gets bits and pieces of table food occassionally. Is there anything we should ABSOLUTELY not feed him that could hurt him? |
there's a sticky in the health/diet section i feed mine natural stuff liked chopped carrot or apple. maybe some potatoes from the crock pot as a treat. |
Yes, there are many foods that you should never feed your dog along with some medicines and plants to avoid. Here's a link to a list of some foods you should avoid: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...oods-dogs.html |
Thank You! My husband gave him the bone from a NY Strip the other night. Now I feel terrible. Never again :( |

I won't ever give mine table scraps because table scraps usually contain too much fat, salt, seasonings, etc. that are not good for them, and also, I don't want them to beg for food while we're eating. That said, they eat human food exclusively (no kibble or dog food of any kind). I homecook foods that are safe and appropriate for them, and they thrive on it :) They eat out of their own plates and never beg for food. |
I would just be careful not to give your puppy human food too often, I have personally gone through a problem with my yorkie--my mother started feeding him scraps and eventually he would not eat his dog food, she stopped feeding him human food but the problem persisted for months afterward. But I'm sure a few natural foods now and again would be okay as a treat:p |
Feeding table scraps just invites pancreatitis which can be life threatening. It can also be very expensive. A co-worker's dad slipped her Yorkie a tiny piece of ham during a family brunch and Sugar ended up at the emergency vet. Her bill was about $1,500. My little ones never get scraps, once in awhile I'll give them carrots, or apples(without skin), cantaloupe, watermelon, but, it's always why I'm standing in the kitchen working..they never beg while we're eating..if you give them too much of that stuff, they won't eat their dog food |
I never give mine table food. My hubby gave my oldest(little bit) a piece of turkey one time at thanksgiving. He got deathly sick. He was vomiting, he wouldnt eat anything or drink anything for days. Poor little thing was so sick. I would give him pedialyte every few hrs to keep him from dehydrating. I had no idea what was wrong with him. When i took him to the vet, he did all kinds of test and couldnt find anything wrong. He ask me if i fed him table food. I told him no, i dont feed my babies table food and then i remembered the turkey my hubby gave him. The vet said that had to be it. After a few days, he got better and i havent fed any of mine tablefood since. I actually thought i was going to lose him over that. I will never again feed them anything like that. |
Cooked bones are very dangerous because they splinter. If you want to give her a bone....raw chicken legs are safe. I know it sounds scary I was raised not to give dogs chicken bones..however I've given Daizy raw chicken legs and she just LOVES them and has never had a problem. I do know that grapes and chocolate are dangerous! |
Our vet recommended raw knuckle bones to help keep the teeth clean. She said to cut as much of the meat off that we could and then let them chew on them for 15 minutes a day. We tried it and they were scared to death. We couldn't get them to get close enough to try. |

I feel like this thread is going to scare people into never feeding any people food. As Yorkieluv said, people food it fine, table scraps are not. Many people foods are appropriate for them. You just have to know which ones they are. This is all that Ellie eats. And turkey breast with no skin, fat or seasonings is fine for most dogs. |
Once in awhile I will feed Ben a baby carrot or some yogurt, and then for a treat about once a week, he and I will share some Vanilla Ice Cream, mine with chocholate syrup of course :D but not for Ben! |
