Anyone with experience with this? I talked with our vet yesterday about Sophie's anxiety around my daughter's dogs. She gets diarrhea every time they visit. They plan to come for New Year's, and I asked what we can do to make the visit easier. She had two suggestions. One would be to give Sophie and antibiotic to try to prevent the diarrhea. The other would be to use an anti-anxiety drug. She said we could try either. We could choose. I am leaning toward the anti-anxiety. Has anyone else had this experience or tried this? |
When we got our third Yorkie, the first two got diarrhea and vomiting. Zada had diarrhea for over two weeks. These guys seem so overly sensitive, and diarrhea is part of it. I wouldn't give any type of medication. Rescue Remedy isn't medication but it helps calm and can be found in most vitamin stores. (Give 4 drops 45 minutes before they get there). Also when she comes, have her keep her dog either in a crate or in an adjoining room with a baby gate up for the first day. Don't let them outside at the same time either. Give Sophie treats and lots of attention. |
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately they have two dogs, about 45 lbs each, and they won't stay behind anything. They jump over gates and won't stay in their kennels. When they come it is overwhelming for me too:(. But they always have problems finding care for them over the holidays; so I break down and say they can come. They seem to be constantly underfoot and into everything. We can't feed Sophie in her normal place either because they drink her water and would get into her food.:( I will check out the Rescue Remedy. Thanks |

There are more boarding and daycare places for dogs now more than ever before, surely they could call one of them and schedule some spa time for them. |

If there are no boarding options close to her home, then I think the suggestion to find a boarding place close to your's is the best solution. Good luck I hope you can find a solution that will satisfy all parties involved. :) |
I certainly appreciate your opinions, and do agree with all of you that the dogs should not be here. I am not offended by your statements. However, my daughter and her husband live in Minneapolis. His mother lives in New Mexico. My ex lives in New York. So, my daughter and her husband fly to New York for Thanksgiving and fly to New Mexico for either Christmas or New Years (expensive). My daughter is working a second job (initially to pay for their wedding) because her husband is working on his masters and PhD. for the next eight years and working too. They have good friends who care for the dogs, but they will do it for either Christmas or New Years and Thanksgiving. They can't expect all the holidays. If I want to spend a holiday with my daughter, I need to put up with the dogs. They just can't afford boarding (also one of the dogs is a rescue and has major problems if in boarding) As I said, I agree with all of you, but this is not the ideal world. So, my question still stands, the anxiety meds or the antibiotic? |
