and it happened...PLEASE HELP!

well...fiona just came into heat...what am i supposed to do? she was due to get spayed on tuesday and now im gonna have to wait... this is the first time in my life that this has happend...and im really upset... :(:(

Ellie May 11-01-2008 03:07 PM

Heat lasts for about 3 weeks. I wouldn't spay for about (at least) 4 weeks after. So I would wait at least 7 more weeks...or possibly a bit longer.

Ashley V 11-01-2008 03:24 PM

Okay, the only female dog I've had was when I was REALLY little... so excues my ignorance... why do you have to wait to spay a female after her heat?

Dara311 11-01-2008 04:42 PM

Ok, well now i just looked at her again, and nothing is bleeding now...maybe i spoke to soon? i went out and got diapers and stuff.......

I think the consensus is pretty much, if you're going to spay, it is best to do it before a female's first heat (reduces a lot of risk factors by a LOT--e.g. mammary cancer, etc...), BUT if she's already in heat, you have to wait until after it's over to spay her. I'm not sure why, I just know that they don't normally spay a dog who is in heat currently. I'm sure someone else knows the why of that....

I'm so sorry, Dara311!! I know you're upset...hang in there! I'm sure the next 3 weeks won't be fun, but you'll get through them, then you can get it done. My vet told me that even though getting them spayed before their first heat reduces risk factors by a lot, getting them spayed before they are 4 yrs old still reduces those risks by a whole lot!! She'll be just fine!!

daisymae2012 11-01-2008 05:09 PM

I'm sorry! I know exactly what you are going through!! Daisy came into heat 2 weeks ago and it has not been fun, but thankfully we only have about another week of it. I'm not sure the reason as to why they will not spay during heat, but I was told I had to wait until she got out. I have her scheduled now for November 20 which will be 5 weeks after she first went into heat. I used diapers even though she has now starting running & hiding when she sees me get them out. Daisy has actually slept a lot more too. I guess she doesn't feel the greatest.:( Good Luck & 3 weeks will go by quickly!!

Roxie came into heat 3 days before her scheduled spay, then had a false pregnancy so we waited 8 weeks to get her spayed. She was more standoffish during her heat and a bit restless. Don't feel bad it happens a lot.

When a female is in heat the blood vessels in the uterus are engorged and it is much more difficult and risky to spay them.

Hopefully, this was a false alarm and you can keep the appointment on Tuesday.

Ashley V 11-01-2008 06:46 PM

Thanks for answering the question for me... it makes sense now!!

MyPeanutAbbyGra 11-01-2008 07:07 PM

Oh geez, this is making me nervous! Abby turned 9 months old on the 25th of Oct. and is scheduled to be spayed on Nov. 11...I'm so afraid she'll go into heat before then.

I'm glad that I read this though, just incase it happens, because when I checked out they told me that it was more expensive to spay when they are in heat...not that they wouldn't do it. I would definetly wait if it happened after reading this.

daisymae2012 how old was Daisy when she went into heat?

Dara311 11-01-2008 08:24 PM

I feel so stupid that i didnt get her spayed when she turned 6 months old, and the only reason why I waited so long was because my vet told me to wait until the end of october, and i thought she would be fine....

They dont want to spay during the heat cycle because it is just a lot of blood, and just a messy process....

she is fast asleep now, more so than she was last night---she isnt dripping blood or anything...i just dont know if she was trying to get a flea *she still has a few crawling on her, and a lot of them are by her little area* and she might have just irritated it or what......is this bad that she will have her first heat, and then get spayed?

when i was a vet tech, i never really dealt with this, so this is why its all new to me, sorry for my ignorance, and thanks for all your help!

Breyli 11-01-2008 08:33 PM

I am waiting until my winter break (I'm a student) for when we fly home to get Breyls spayed at her primary care vet. I talked with them and they said that it would be fine to wait that long (she is 7 1/2 mos now) because she is so tiny and likely won't have her first heat until she's closer to a year old. Now this thread has me worried and I'm considering perhaps bringing her to the vet I use here. You guys have me worried now.

dre1141 11-01-2008 09:12 PM

Lexi had her first heat almost to the date of 6 mths old--it was easier then I thought. In fact never having a femal dog as a child I had no clue how to tell and my groomer was the one who actually told me-I felt stupid at the time but now I know. She was about 2 lbs when it happened and she didn't bleed a whole lot. Hang in there I was really worried too when it first happened but once your thru it you'll look back and think it wasn't soo bad.

daisymae2012 11-02-2008 11:04 AM

Daisy was right at 9 months when she came in. My vet told me to wait until she was closer to a year also b/c of her size, but she definitely came in before a year!

Patti 11-02-2008 12:23 PM

I had 3 that came into heat right at 8 months, one at a year, so it's hard to tell.

Spaying on Heat

Hi guys! The reason you can't spay whilst on heat is that the blood vessels are all enlarged, so its really easy for the dogs to bleed to death. We didnt know that when we sent our dog in, and all the vet told us was that it would cost more, not that it was a risk. Anyway, we went to pick her up and the vet told us that when they had brought her out they realised she had internal bleeding and they needed to take her back into theatre! Thank goodness she was ok (after a week in the vet at our expense!). So I would recommend that you make 100% sure that they're not in heat before you take them in. I asked the vet why they didnt tell us, and she said "Thats why we call it a practise. Because we are all practising these things, and there are always risks"

I'm so glad I found this out before hand, just in case.
I'm sorry that happened to you.

Dara311 11-03-2008 05:22 AM

anything else!?

is there anything else i should be doing while she is in heat? she seems to be feeling good, eating, drinking, playing, being herself. she is tolerating the diaper really well, and doesnt bother with it, i take it off so we can go out, and she just runs and runs! i just called the vet and cancelled her spay for tomorrow, and they rescheduled her for the 25th- do you think that is too soon to do!?:(

daisymae2012 11-03-2008 05:43 AM

Dara 311,
My vet told me to wait atleast 4 weeks from the time she came into heat to schedule her spay. The heat usually lasts 3 weeks (maybe shorter, maybe a little longer for some dogs). Daisy is scheduled to be spayed on November 20, which is right at 5 weeks since she came into heat on October 18. My vet told me it is best to get them done as soon as they get out of heat instead of waiting a couple of months down the road. I personally think you will be fine getting her spayed on November 25.

Awww.....I know how you feel...I hated leaving Daisy when she first went in. Her bleeding actually stopped last Thursday so she didn't bleed a full 2 weeks. She is still a little fiesty though, so I am having to keep an eye on her. She has been a lot more lovable & hasn't left my side through all of this. I will be glad to get her fixed so we don't have to deal with this again. How big is your little one?

IM more so mad at myself cuz i knew that she needed to be done at 6 months old, but the vet told me to wait until the end of october, she just turned 7 mnts on the 29th! she is about 9.5 lbs...shes not overweight, just a big yorkie! so i know she will do fine- i cannot wait until this gets done with!
