Solid Gold food amount???
 
I'm currently switching my YT from Nutro to Solid Gold Wee Bits. I'm doing it gradually of course, but since the Solid Gold pieces are so much smaller than the Nutro Small Bites (and since Solid Gold is a better quality) should I feed her a smaller amount of food once she's 100% on the Solid Gold or should I keep the amount the same? With the Nutro, I used to give her 1/2 cup twice a day. With the Solid Gold, that seems like an awful lot, but I could just be overreacting :rolleyes:

Any help would be appreciated.

You'll find the portion size to feed on the side of the bag. :)

I can tell you a cup of food a day is too much. The serving size for my dogs is a 1/3 cup a DAY.

How old/big is your baby? One cup per day for a yorkie is an awful lot it seems, but if she is not over/underweight, then you're ok. Depending on her size/age, you may need to adjust accordingly.

She's 1yr. and approximately 7lbs. She's not overweight/underweight. I used to feed her 1/4 cup twice a day, then switched to 1/3 cup and eventually I was giving her 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/3 at night. Every now and again, she would throw up a small amount of bile (not an everyday, every week process though) just once in a great while, which I thought was because she was hungry and needed more to eat, which was why I started giving her 1/2 cup twice a day and she seemed fine with it. Now with the Solid Gold though, that would seem like an awful lot to give her.

I switched Bella to Solid Gold Wee bits and she is just crazy about it! ive never seen her eat food so well! Im sure your babies will love it too

Gosh, I probably wuldn't feed her much more than a 1/3 cup, 2x a day. Maybe a small snack right before bed? Maybe swing by your vet's offce and ask to weigh her, and then keep track of her body conditon. Raise or lower the amount depending on her condition. Now that she's a year old her metabolism should slow down, even more so if she's spayed. I think you will really like the Solid Gold!

I'm guilty of not looking at the feeding guidelines. In general, a food made of smaller kibbles won't have as much air space as a larger kibble so 1 cup will contain more food. Same thing with a flat kibble versus a round one. You can check this by weighing a cup of differently shaped kibbles. I always keep an eye on my dogs. If your dog is looking thin, you should feed more. If your dog is looking fat, feed less. This, of course, assumes there are no health issues involved. I like my dogs to have a waistline and not look like a tube through the midsection. Activity level and digestibility also are important factors in how much to feed. It usually takes a few weeks to fine tune your feeding amounts when switching foods. Also, my dogs eat more in winter than summer as they are more active when it's not so hot out.

1/3 cup twice a day is what I was thinking. I started mixing it in today and she seems to really like it. There was some food left over in the bowl, but it was only the Nutro. She gobbled up all of the Solid Gold. I think this food will be really good for her.
