Raw rice means uncooked. You measure out your cup before you cook it. Brown rice is much healthier than white rice. Brown rice is loaded with vitamins and minerals that are processed out of white rice. It is also much higher in fiber. |

I usually buy a package of frozen chicken breasts and boil them all at the same time and freeze them. Then I just have to take one out and defrost it. I boil about four eggs ahead of time, too. When I'm ready to make a new batch of food, all I have to do is cook the rice. I put the chicken and egg in a little food chopper, transfer it to a bowl and add the bone meal, salt substitute and canola oil. I mix it all together and then add the cottage cheese. Finally, I stir in the rice. Lady gets a half cup twice a day so it lasts several days. |
If your dog has liver problems I don't know that chicken and rice are good to feed your dog. |
The recipe I posted is designed for dogs with liver disease. Chicken and rice are fine. Red meat produces too much ammonia and should be avoided in dogs with liver disease. Brown rice is high in fiber. Liver compromised dogs needs lots of soluble fiber which helps absorb ammonia and reduce nitrogenous wastes. Dr. Center's tofu diet calls for rice, too. |
Ladymom, thank for the update. This will be good, in small amts to supplement the Vegetarian kibble..... like an appetizer. |
Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but did your baby have a urinalysis to check for crystals?? |
I could be wrong...but I thought there was 'something' about rice, specifically brown rice that wasn't good to feed liver compromised dogs? I thought potato, sweet potato and noodles were a better choice than rice  I was told by my nutritionist that they should be eating a diet with more carbs and veggies verses protein, but the protein has to be of quality and the 'right kind' of protein, plus the right supplements :) |

We do use chicken and turkey here but vegetarian protein is probably best if she is having any symptoms. As for bile acid testing, we tested three times and it was up so high last time with no conclusive test results that we probably won't test again. With MVD, you may be able to stop testing because they aren't going to come down anyway. With LS, they should come down after surgery. If you are trying to get them to come down with diet and supplements, retesting in 30 days would be normal. |

1 lb tofu, 2 lbs cottage cheese, 4 cups cooked rice , 6 T safflower oil, 1 tsp salt substitute, 6 tsp dicalcium phosphate, 1-1 tsp pectin. Can use a strong low salt cheese to flavor. (Center S. A., Reynolds, A., College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 14853) Dr. Dodd's Liver Cleansing Diet contains potatoes and sweet potatoes. Maybe that's what you were thinking of? Dr Dodds Liver Cleansing Diet The key is that the diet contain complex carbohydrates like rice or potatoes or even oatmeal to absorb the ammonia and other toxins so the liver doesn't have to. |

So LadyMom, how much does Lady weigh, and do you feed her any kibble or anything in addition to the homecooked 1 cup a day? |

She also has food allergies. She had three episodes of HGE in four months so I had to stop her vegetarian kibble. She is doing really well on this diet. She's gained a whole pound in two months! Anyway, to answer your questions, Lady just got weighed on Thursday. She weighed 7.2 pounds. She gets this diet plus plain nonfat yogurt before bed. Her treats are green beans and Busy Buddy Itty Bitty Sweet Potato biscuits. They are wheat free since she is allergic. She also gets tons of supplements including probiotics and fish oil. She's a mess, but I love her! |
