how many bully sticks a day?
 

just wondering how many bully sticks are allowed a day. these are the 6 or 8 inch ones. The paper was thrown in the garbage off the top of the package before I got to read it. It may not even say how many. Just wanted to ask others opinions......thanks:)

I don't know about the others, but I give only give my boys one or two a week. Because of the cost and I'm not sure how their tummies would handle a daily one.

I'm not sure what brand you are using, but the Merrick brand is made for chewing not eating. Joey loves these, and chews on it constantly, but it takes a week to go through a 6 inch stick, so when that's gone I give him another. The hardness is similar to a bone, and I believe this is what helps scrape the teeth. It sounds like your sticks are much softer, and they are using them more as a food source.

I also get the 6" bully sticks for my girls and it usually lasts a week, sometimes longer. I sometimes end up having to throw them away and start over but it should last days.

Alfie has had the same bully stick for a couple weeks. He's using it for his chew toy, not so much to eat. The other dog will get a hold of it from time to time however, and he will gnaw it down in one sitting!

Can you find these in Petsmart/Petco?

I guess it depends where you live, I know some people say they do, but I could not find them locally. I got mine on e-bay, and there are other on-line sources. The flosses are made up of thinner strips braided and people say that their dogs go through those faster, so I think the regular 6-inch are the best deal. Here's the company, but you can find better prices on-line. Merrick Pet Foods - Dog Treats Two - three dollars a stick is common, but that's not bad since it lasts a week, and I believe it's a very important part of the dental health. The Merrick Company uses no preservatives and their products have no expiration date, which tells me they were dried properly.

I "free-feed" my puppy 5" bully stick. She hardly finishes it. She gets bored/tired of it easily I guess. She was able to finish one (till it's 2" long) after 1.5 months. I threw away the remaning 2 inches of it.

I got Bully Sticks at Petco.

I think the name "Bully Sticks" is generic and anyone can use it, there's a great difference between brands, and now that many companies are importing from China, I am very leery of just any brand. I would look for the words, made in the USA at the very least.

I thought I was getting a "real" Bully Stick, at Petco, since it said Bully Stick on the label. The label says Red Barn with a California address, but it doesn't say where it's from. So, could be imported by Red Barn.

The following web site says all natural, etc. I wonder if these are good?

It's a real "Bully Stick" but like I said before, I think any company can use that name. I only investigated a few places, and I know many brands "import" the beef they use, many that say "free range" are imported from Mexico, I'm not saying that this is necessary bad, but once they say imported you don't know what country that they've been imported from, and if the processing took place in that country or here. How they are processed is extremely important. Foods for dogs don't have as high a standard as those foods sold for human consumption, and this has led to many problems. Now with China competing in an extremely cost effective way, many dealers are selling their products, and I don't think China has proven to have very high quality control standards yet. I have read of two cases where Bully sticks were possibly involved in illnesses, and in both cases the brand was something other than Merrick Bully sticks, and had expiration dates on them. However, many people use other brands besides Merrick with great results. I think the "harder" sticks would cause less bacteria growth due to the fact that they dry out so fast when they are not being chewed on, the faster they dry, the less bacteria. Bacteria need moisture to survive.

ya I think there are differnt types out there,someseem to be softer,,not sure why,,,I like the ones from pet supplies plus,,(not sure what brand) they had a bin of them...but the one I got seemed to last forever, and that was with 3 dogs chewing on it,,,it lasted at least 2 weeks,,and they were nonstop on this thing,,,but I got one from petedge, the brand was ranch rewards,,it said it was a real bullystick, and it did look and feell like one..but thay had this thing GONE on one day..:eek:..and chloe got really mushy poo...it was like tar stuck all over her and I had to bath her,,(yuck) I will stick to the ones from the pet store.
