Dog Food Question??
 

Lily is 7 months old and she is a very good eater with about anything I have given her. I bought some "Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul" yesterday and she ate some real good but at bedtime (probably 3-4 hrs. after she ate it) she woke up from sleeping and she was like sneezing/choking?? I got up and gave her some benedryl and some canned Wellness food that I knew she would eat good and she was fine?? I am afraid to give her that Chicken Soup kibble again?? Could that have done that to her?? I have sent for samples of Lifes Abundance to try but it hasn't come yet and I had her on Canidae and bought "Authority" from Petsmart in the meantime so I thought when I found the "Chicken Soup" food that would be better for her?? I don't even know if that is what made her sneeze/choke or not but that is the only thing I could think of that she had different?? THANKS for any advice!!

I'm glad she is otay! I would probably not give it to her again. I keep to name brand foods, but thats just me.

That "Chicken Soup for the Puppys Soul" is recommended highly on here and I put my zip code in to find a dealer here to buy it?? Is it not a good food???

I'm sure its safe to feed, but if she had a reaction like she had, I wouldnt give it to her again, or just ask your vet. I'm not disputing everyones opinion on here at all, I just stick to like eukanuba, iiams, purina, foods like that. did you give her that food by itself, or did you mix it with her other food?

Chicken Soup for Puppy Lover's soul is good quality. Has very good ingredients. It could be allergies. Not all name brand food are good quality.

I was always told from the vets that I work with that allergies are typically not present until dogs are about 1 year old. but i dont agree with that.

usually when you switch food you should do a 3 day grace period, where you add a few pieces of kibble to the food the first day, increase it the next, and gradually switch it all....

my 5 month old has always eaten it and loves both the kibble and wet food. it is good quality. you can see the veggies in it!

I have a 2 year old Yorkie named Toby. When he was about six months old he got a BAD case of gastroenteritis...he almost died. I tried him on Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul, Iams, etc etc etc.....introducing them slowly during the first year of his life. About six months later he got another bad bout of the gastroenteritis, and each time after he suffered from this, my vet put him om Hills Science Diet I/D canned food. until he could tolerate hard food again. After the last time, I asked the vet if I could just keep him on it and he said Absolutely. I got a prescription, and ever since, that is all he eats twice a day. He has not been sick a day since....he loves it and I heat it a little bit straight out of the fridge. He also eats 1/2 of a Hills natural treat when he gets a treat (I cut them in a half because they are kind of big). I have a happy, healthy, shiny baby since finding this food for him. The problem with Yorkies is they have tender systems, and when his vet told me if he keeps getting these bad bouts, it could cause him to have diabetes. I am willing to pay a little more to keep my baby safe....it is about $21 for 12 cans at PetSmart.....

OH MY I feel HORRIBLE!! I just put some kibble in a little bowl and she didn't eat a whole lot of it. I didn't think anything of it until she started that sneezing/choking 3-4 hours later?? She quit doing it as soon as I gave her some of the can food that I had in frig (Wellness) that she had eaten before and I gave her 1/2 benedryl and she was back to playing and went back to bed and slept through the night and no more problems?? I didn't give it to her today again though?? I didn't know if food could make her do that or not??? I have given her different kinds of kibble before and nothing like that has happened but I just wondered if it could be that kibble since that is the only thing I can think that she had different?? I don't mean to cause any problems here I just thought I would see if anyone knew if that could cause her to sneeze/cough like that 3-4 hrs. after she ate some?? THANKS ..... I don't want to do anything to hurt her and ya all seem to know alot on here so I was hoping someone else might know??

I completely understand. I went through similar issues with two of mine with many different brands of food. Chicken Soup would be my first choice food to feed mine IF they could eat it, but they can't. Sometimes the 'best quality' food is not always the 'best option' for every dog.

She could had have a piece of kibble stuck in her throat. Try going back to the kibble you were giving before and hopefully it won't happen again.

The problem with foods like Purina, Iams, Euk, etc. is that the ingredients are less than appetizing... You have by-products which some people don't mind because they say that is what dogs eat in the wild but unless they mean organ meat when they say by-products, my dog isn't getting it. Then you have preservatives like BHA and ethoxyquin. If you Google "ethoxyquin banned", there are some interesting articles about it being very restricted in human food and even banned in some countries.:eek: Then there are unnamed animal products like "animal digest". My question is, what animal are we talking about? Are we talking chicken and turkey or are we talking snake raccoon? If they don't name the animal, how can we possibly know for sure? Sometimes it changes based on what they can get cheaper (for some companies anyway). Now so many foods contain wheat gluten meal or corn gluten meal. It is just a binder but that is what the big recall was over and I would guess that this ingredient is still coming from China for some companies.

And honest vets will tell you that they learned very little about nutrition in vet school. So all they are going to tell you to do is use the brands they know like SD, RC and Iams.

Also, I am not a fan of PETA but they do have some interesting footage that they say is from an Iams research lab that shows some horrible animal abuse. The videos are online if you want to see them.

So that is why many of us refuse to feed any of the brands listed above.
I only consider them for prescription diets and actually the SD Nature's Best line isn't the worst food ever...

Lily has never had any "food reactions" that I have ever noticed before and she will eat most any kind of dog food that she has had so far. I gave her the "Authority" kibble that I already had and when she seemed fine I mixed a little bit of the Chicken Soup kibble w/it and she ate it all and nothing happened?? I hope she doesn't have that "reverse sneezing"?? She woke up from sleeping doing it the other night?? She does sneeze/choke like that sometimes when she plays hard or once in awhile when she drinks water but nothing bad?? I rub her throat and she seems to be ok?? She seems fine now so I have no idea?? THANKS!!

My dogs love Canidae. I have fed my dogs this for 4 years now and they love it and have full rich coats...I have heard Wellness is very good...Stick to those and you cant go wrong

All I know is my yorkie cannot eat dry food without it making him sick. I feel like he gets the treats a couple of times a day for his teeth and he has done well on the I/D, so I will stick to it. Maybe your baby is not chewing it well...and getting choked on it? I know Toby eats kind of fast sometimes and will get choked.....just a thought.:animal-pa
